Most firms don’t have A3 as a thing, so it’s possible to come in as an S1. Sometimes they’ll ask you to do another year to get used to the business at the new firm, but that’s a discussion you could have with the recruiter. Also by now, the standard offer to refer if you want one.
I’d say M&A has better exit opportunities and is more interesting to most. KPMG does not have A3, so def possible to come in as S1. That’s a discussion you’d have during the recruitment process. Happy to refer you if interested. Can submit your resume today too.
I’m in international. It would be tough to come in as a senior in international with 0 intl experience, but with 3 years of tax experience if you’re able to at least talk about how you’ve worked on tax projects with international issues, you could probably transfer in as an S1 or at least set yourself up for an early promotion. I’m happy to refer as well and get that bonus check 😉
They’d definitely bring you in as a senior 1. And that would be fine. If you do a good job, I’d say an early promo is even possible. International and m&a are fairly similar if you get into the structuring/transaction side. (I’m an international guy that only does m&a work essentially).
If you want to do more structuring, I’d go international. You’ll probably get a more diverse experience than m&a along with things that may fit your already developed skill set.
International tax senior here. Provision work, yes, sometimes, review only, very seasonal. Lots of 5471/8858/8865/8621, theses forms will be the majority of your compliance work. Occasionally do 1042s and 1042. I am an attorney but I do work on lots of compliance work. I will say 60-80% are compliance in summer/fall before Oct 15; 20-30% compliance other time. If you are in NYM and have a bar license, I think you can do more consulting once you build some good rapport with consulting heavy managers or partners. You can of course choose to do more provision/compliance and audit support, if you are good with ASB 23 stuff. Happy to refer in KPMG.
