Ask for what you want / what you're worth in that city. Not based on what your current salary is. Your current salary should never even come up. Frankly, the company should give you their range first.
Have moved 4 times and learnes you have to be specific. For some reason HR think its ok to sacrifice way of living a bit to change cities so cant just say cost of living. Use things that are semi-necessry but inflexible (ie rent you can always find a cheaper place) but a pound of turkey, gallon of gas, taxes yiu have to pay and cant get much cheaper.
5% increase in tax, 20% increase in turkey, 30% increase in gas. So that 7% increase in salary is not gunna cut it. Use tangible non flexible things to prove the value you need to move.
and there are online tools that will do the math. enter the city you’re moving from and the city you’re moving to...
Negotiate based on the value you bring to the company, not how high your rent will be. They won’t give a shit.
