Even though I made a decent amount at my previous job - I was lowballed by the hiring manager and made the least on my team. They ended up giving me a raise once I found this out. With that being said I didn’t want to leave any money on the table with the new company, so even though it would be the most I’ve made hourly to date - I asked what the allotted budget for the role was. I haven’t heard anything back since last Thursday. I’m hoping it’s due to them being out for the holiday and not the fact that I could’ve counted myself out by asking…
The truth of the matter is that what's done is done. I understand not wanting to leave money on the table and advocating for yourself, but if the pay is better than where you're at and around the average for the role in your area, there is likely someone out there happy with the offer. And hey, you might still hear back. Some companies are okay with this, other's not. It's all a learning experience. Are you planning to follow up with them sometime this week on the status of the position?
I agree. It’d be easier to get say two dollars more per hour now rather than waiting a year for a fifty cent raise…
I've heard stories of companies rescinding offers, but that's usually because the candidate did something that was considered unserious. As long as you were professional and asking a legitimate question I don't think that would cause a problem. As for it being a huge corporation, that's true, but a lot of times these things come down to a small team, or an individual, making a decision. And there's always pressure to reduce costs, so while the company could afford anything, the budget in any given department is another matter.
I take interviews very seriously! Down to practicing leading up to the day and choosing appropriate attire. The person who’d be my direct manager said that he absolutely is wanting to move forward with me and they were all smiles the entire time. I’m hoping that they don’t take offense to my question. I didn’t bring up a specific salary expectation either. I simply asked what the allotted budget was for the role along with two other questions that shows that I’m looking forward to being on the team. Hopefully that sways them and the worst they say is the offer is the best they can provide!

I would say to focus on the figured. What’s done is done and you’ve asked. It’s still not too late for them reasonably to respond! I normally follow up a week after. It can take time for them to run through the channels and come up with an answer
