Honestly, I’d do both. Alert your connection you are applying and they can put in a word for you. Then reach out to the recruiter to express your interest.
Get a referral. At least in my experience, companies prefer an internal recommendation over a cold applicant (I guess you know the recruiter but still). Also, they might have a referral program.
If I’m reading this right, the recruiter is a 3rd party recruiter, not at the agency you want to work for. Is that correct? If so, unless the recruiter has submitted you for a prior role at that same company, would highly recommend trying to get in on your own. A lot of agencies have cut back on staffing firm usage given the economy and slowed hiring.
Sorry I misunderstood! Do both. However, if you try to have someone refer you, they likely wouldn’t be able to get credit for a referral bonus if you’ve already been in contact with a recruiter, so be up front with them that you’ve been in touch with the recruiter before. It depends on the agency and their referral policy, of course. Hopefully your referrer wouldn’t just be in it for the money and would refer you anyway!
