So... are agencies hiring, or no? I feel like one minute I’m witnessing layoffs, and the next I’m seeing job postings on LinkedIn.

What are some concrete reasons why someone in consulting would be fired, other than the obvious stupid things?

So someone I know asked HR about a boot policy. When he found out that there wasn’t one, but his boss said there was (who gave the guys $ for boots and the claimed it on his expense reimbursements as something else) the boss got mad at him for askingHR (and in trouble for the expense reimbursements) and then 2 days later laid off my friend. There appears to be no notice of bad performance and this person always was the first person on the job site ready to work. Thoughts?

I was recently (in April) fired from a good nursing position that I was at for 5 years. Too many career employees who gave their prime years to their employers are having to face a daunting job market. How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up.
