Payment nerd alert 🥸
Amex operates a 3 party model ie they are the card issuer and effectively are fronting the money you use on the credit card in comparison to Mastercard and Visa who operate 4 party models ie there is a bank like Chase that issues you the card and has risk scored you, is fronting your line of credit.
Because of the difference in model Amex's fees to the merchant are higher, and as a result Amex has a smaller footprint of acceptance internationally than Visa and mastercard as merchants simply don't want to pay those higher fees.
If you want a card for international use i wouldn't recommend Amex.
AMEX: Acting as the issuer they have a direct relationship with the consumer, data and insights into their spend that the other card brands (mastercard and visa) don't necessarily have.
CONSUMER: for domestic transactions in the USA no real advantage other than the points plans associated at sign up. As discussed disadvantage internationally as acceptance is lower than for Mastercard and Visa.
Amex Gold is a better daily spend card, but if you are using it internationally AMEX is not accepted everywhere.
OP I’m happy to provide a referral for both cards if you would like.

I have both. Interested in the response. AMEX Gold seems better.
Lmk if you want a sapphire invite!

I looove my chase sapphire for personal use! Points are worth more if you use them for travel and they accrue pretty quickly. Also, great customer service and their app is fantastic.

Shappire reserve / preferred for international travel! Amex is accepted some places but yeah most don't like Amex
I have a Citi double cash back card for everyday use. This new card would hopefully replace that

OP after I started using solely chase, I actually got a year of 0% APR from Citi 8 months later to entice me to come back!
I used it to pay for large purchases that I’ll pay off in full at the end of the year before interest is charged.

I also went to chase after a Citi double cash card. Do a sapphire preferred and freedom unlimited combo so you can earn more points in most categories through freedom then transfer points and get better redemption through sapphire preferred
I would also highly consider the chase reserve depending on where you live and how you travel/spend. Yes it’s a higher annual fee, but a lot of the benefits are awesome and my card more than pays for itself between the $300 travel credit, priority pass, $10 go puff monthly credit, door dash premium and $5 monthly credit, instacart membership, primary rental car insurance etc.
No FX fees for Schwab debit card if you open a free account. Just saying.
Amex platinum doesn't make sense to me with the high fee unless you travel a ton to use the hotel/lounge/flight perks. The 3x - 5x rewards you get with CSP for less than $100 is better.
