Alright, so I'm nearing 40 and feeling the itch to make a major career shift. Accounting has been good to me, but it's not my passion. I'm excited about exploring new fields, but I'm also terrified of running into a brick wall of ageism.

Has anyone here successfully switched careers in their late 30s or early 40s? Did you encounter any age bias during your job search or interviews? How did you overcome it? Any advice on framing my experience and skills to appeal to employers in a new industry?

You're never too old to try new things. But is work really meant to be your passion? Imo work is just a means to earn money and eventually retire so that you can pursue enjoyment outside of your career. What do you like to do for fun? What makes you happy? I don't think changing careers is a good plan because you said accounting has been good for you - I assume this means it gives you the funds you need and isn't strenuous on your body and mind. Maybe try a new hobby instead or change employers because there are lots of different kinds of accounting jobs.

like

Passion? Youre thinking about it all wrong. A job is just a means to an end, and not the end in itself . Find hobbies and passions outside of work and use the job as a means to fund them.

Like others have said, if you need to make money, then a complete career change at 40 may not be wise for your eventual retirement plans.

Maybe seek something accounting adjacent, like corporate Finance, auditing, special projects, even government forensic accounting etc. could be enough ”spice” for you while not giving up all you worked for in the past.

like

Why not be in something related to the finance /accounting field. I feel you and get where you are coming from. I know what it is when something doesn’t bring you joy no matter how it may look good and life’s too short. You can try insurance/risk/compliance/AML/FP&A/Data Analytics. It’s never too late. Life’s too short not to have joy and trust me, your passion can be your career. When people think of passion, they think of activities like hiking but a passion could be enjoying detecting fraud, cleaning up data, setting operational risk processes etc. Research and make that switch, you in 5-10yrs would thank your stars, GOD, yourself for being courageous. Remember you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. Wishing you the best.

Hello! I'm a Manager II (Automation) in PwC and looking for exit opportunities on West Coast. What kind of roles should I target? I would like to go to a product company, rather than consulting.

Just got another rejection... Is exiting to FAANG or MB really this hard? Trying to go tech.. or mbb, but not getting anywhere. I have 2 masters (mba, ms) from top schools, been in consulting for over 10 years, I am confident that I know my stuff well..but still I keep getting rejected. Interviewed with Google, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and a few others and every-time there is something that is not a match... are the hiring managers looking for like 100% match? That will never happen!!!

Those of you who have left consulting for Program/Project Management at tech companies (not Product), what do you think of the switch? Have heard anecdotally that work can be uninteresting and career progression suspect, but seems like a very chill, high paying exit. Does this differ greatly if it is technical PM? Would love to hear thoughts.

Currently SM at Bain (4 years post MBA) and was approached for a senior associate role in portfolio ops at a large PE fund. Been told 2.5 years to VP and another 2.5 years to director. Feels like the role is a bit junior but offers a 50% pay jump.

Thoughts on seniority? Also, any interview resources for PE portfolio roles?

Anyone available to review my resume/guide me through this job search? I’ve been applying places for the past 6 months and am not getting responses. Unemployment has run out and I’m starting to crumble under the pressure of bills.
