Am I making a mistake by switching from senior audit (2.5 YOE) in the nonprofit niche to Accountant II at a large software company? Does the title change look bad?

Once you get in the real world, promotions are not as easy to come by as they are in public accounting, so there’s that to consider.

Given the industry switch, the demotion seems reasonable, but personally I’d switch industries in audit and then bounce after a year to keep the title.

What do you want to do? Yes, it looks weird, but if you want that job, then title should not matter. Personally, the title means a lot to me.

To a smart, aware person this doesn't look bad. Often large companies have lower-level job titles for roles that would have a higher-level job title at a smaller company. A lot of people are dumb though. W/out knowing more, it sounds like a good move to me.

I was thinking of something along those lines as well. I’m in NFP audit so no commercial clients or firms will take me. This large software company would be a good pivot just at a lower title.

If you are concerned about title it may be an issue. However, there is so much variance the title doesn't really equate, I recently took a position with a lower title but was very lateral. It was a much better fit for me and that is what mattered.

Titles should show progression upwards. Too many bots and people biasing when looking at your resume for 7 seconds.

there aren’t really “upward” exit ops into the nonprofit space. and there’s gonna be a bit of a re-learning curve since nonprofit accounting has a sufficient number of unique quirks that you’ve been focused on for a few years. so this seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Negotiate the title to senior accountant instead of salary or sign on bonus. Do not accept the title accountant 2. You need the title to job hop in future. Why to job hop? You may not want to do the same task for 40th month close. You might need to move internally or externally to learn new skills

Hi all,

After the final interview, HR reached out and said they would like to extend an offer. HR gave a ball park of 135k - 145k base with about 15k in sign-on equity and 20k annual bonus.

After a couple of days, HR person came back with with 125k base and 20k annual bonus. No sign-on equity anymore. What should I do given that these numbers seem way lower than the initial range provided? HR claimed it’s because of “market conditions”.

Hi Fishes, Have a query. My spouse is working in the electrical and electronics field for the last 15years, in various GCC countries. Now he wishes to come back to India and wants to join some company here. But seems like similar opportunities are very less, say close to 3-4%. What is your opinion if he takes a DevOps course and do a career change ? What will be the % of getting interviews ? Even if he gets selected, how much will he get?

I recently sign a lease. The apartment will put my security deposit into an interest-bearing account and requires me to fill out a form W9. I will join EY this June and just wondering if this is ok in terms of the independence rule. I guess the apartment will put my deposit in some sort of funds. Anyone with EY has experience? Reading the independence brochure, looks like it does not specify something related to this scenario but just wanted to confirm . TIA!

Hi,
Wondering to get some advice on how hard it would be or get an understanding of the market to get back into private accounting/advisory or financial analyst after stepping away for 2.5 years. I was in public accounting for almost 5 years prior and stepped away as a supervising senior in audit for a mid tier firm. Would love to get a chance to connect/network with some people.
