You're definitely not poor. Feeling poor is more about your psychology and reference points.
Whether or not 250k in SF is better or worse than 150k elsewhere really depends where that 150k is. Vs NYC? 250k SF is better. Vs Atlanta? It is basically equal. Vs middle of nowhere Mississippi? Then 150k in nowhere is better.
If you need a stranger's validation and attention, congratulations; you have already achieved this.
You’re young in your career - you continue to earn more. $500k HHI at 30 in Bay Area is not bad.
The constant barrage of social media has people so out of touch with socioeconomics.
Not sure if this is legit question or an understatement flex. Either way Congratulations you and your spouse are doing well ! I was wondering why does the internet or people online has so much impact on your outlook. I think that’s what’s interesting.
No. My parents want us to move back to a LCOL state where I grew up. Houses are cheap there, but it would be hard to find a high paying job. Of course it feels very suburban there too, and the weather is bad for nearly half of the year. Every time I visit, I’m reminded of how cheap the SFHs are and how we should be able to easily buy a huge house with a pool there, but by Day 4 I would just want to get on the plane and be back to CA.
OP honestly its the cost of living combined with inflation. If you were living somewhere else making that salary I am sure you would feel differently. However the cost of living is so high here that even making a really good salary, I think a lot of us are struggling. Especially those of us in a one income household so I feel your pain.

I will never understand these people who say "we max out 401k and save but feel poor". You realize poor people don't have a 401k or $400, right?
Go live in a flyover state if you want to buy a house for low six figures.
Well said. I feel seen.
“Poor” is certainly the wrong word to use. You are in no way “poor”. But, it is an understandable feeling when you’re in this very high cost of living environment surrounded by extremely well off people. Set a budget. Do what you love. Don’t compare yourself to others. Go touch some grass. If you need a perspective reset, go spend an afternoon volunteering at a homeless shelter. You’ll find that you’re very well off and appreciate what you have a lot more.
You’re not suppose to feel poor, just not rich.
In most other places you can go buy a decently sized SFH and start a family without pause.
Here that might a minimum of 1.5M, maybe 2M depending on where you live. Is it doable? Yeah…but probably won’t be that comfortable.
Buying a townhouse isn’t the “American Dream” for better or worse. Some would expect a better living situation at close to 500k HHI.
A 1500 sqft townhouse in east bay is what you can afford at that price — a hike if you commute.
Don’t forget childcare — very pricey 0-5 until public school (if you send).
Ok cool
You’re not poor. You’re rich by any standard.
