Agree on the Cathay ticket. AA first class is worst than Cathay's Business
Use your AA points to book on Cathay First.
AA’s business class seat is the same as Cathay’s business class seat (AA licenses it from Cathay). With the same hard product, same lounges, and the advantage of AA’s ice cream sundaes, I actually prefer AA to CX in J. CX’s F is superior to AA’s F product, however. The ability to use SWU to go from Y to J or J to F is a huge benefit too, so I almost always fly AA, whether in J (booked as Y) or in F (booked as J).
AA used to have angled lie flat seats on the 777-200s (772) and 767s. The AA 777-300ER (77W), which AA has always used on DFW-HKG, has had a fully flat reverse herringbone seat, licensed from Cathay, since the aircraft was introduced into service with AA in 2013. See https://thepointsguy.com/2015/06/review-aa-777-300er-business-class-jfk-london/ for a review of the product and photos.
Not directly relevant to the HKG question, but other AA long haul aircraft (772, 788, 789) have different J products, but all are fully lie flat with all seats having direct aisle access.
Long but yay
Yay
Yay. Was fantastic. Use systemwide upgrades
@McK1 - no way. I've taken AA and Cathay to HK last two years ago on multiple trips. AA's have the reclining seats that are side by side and Cathay's are pod like and sit diagonal to each other. You can lie down all the way in them.
@D1 you must have flown one of the few 772s that didn’t get refurbed yet. As McK1 notes, AA 77Ws have the same hard product in business class and those ice cream sundaes are unreasonably good. If I can get a confirmed SWU on AA I’ll usually go for that, followed by 70k one way business awards on either CX, AA, or JL (through HND/NRT). Source: flew to HKG 6 times last year, mostly via LAX and ORD
Are SWUs likely to clear on that route for exec plats? I was under the impression J and Y fill up often with paid travelers.
Not DFW — I’m about 1 for 4 on that one, but I’m something like 3 for 4 through LAX and 2 for 4 through ORD-NRT
