American work culture varies so much from international work culture. American work culture is less people focused to me. The many layoffs are a great testament to that. International work culture is more relaxed and centered around cultural beliefs. We learned about Asians traditions in my global strategy business elective course. What are some differences you have observed if your have worked at either?

I haven't worked for any international companies, but I can attest to this feeling even just from my travels. American culture is less focused on people and social connections, so many people don't even talk to their families. Whereas other cultures have multiple generations in one household. I feel like it's the brute capitalism and individualism of American culture that makes us this way.

Yeah we live in a very individualistic society. It’s sad

I've only worked for American companies, but I've worked with a lot of people from other cultures, so I've heard a lot about that. It would be good if American businesses adopted some of the employment practices from other cultures, but I'm not optimistic that it will ever happen. Americans are convinced the way they do things is the best, and they won't change.

I have as well, and also don’t think think American companies would either

I am CTO of my team from Japan.

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. I have now been asked to design an architecture for an upcoming project, and document it all. Nothing at this company has been well documented before. I have a feeling they just planning to use my previous experience and then let me go since my pay is high. Is there a way I can safeguard against this?

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?

Have you got some advice? Is it possible to work for US remotely without visa? What other countries pay well? Is it possible to land a 100k$+ with this kind of experience and working from Italy?

So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?
