Are you trying to payoff the card and close it (i.e. You don't want the account anymore)? Or are you just trying to pay your card balance and avoid interest/late fees? If the latter, you only pay the statement balance and repeat every month. No harm in paying the "activity since last statement" but no need to do so. Also, AMEX now lets you carry a balance in "pay over time charges". Not recommended, but it's no longer just a charge card.
There is no difference in how charge cards and credit cards calculate monthly statement periods. Things that are purchased during that period are what's due.
Credit cards allow you to float a portion of what's due for a fee. (Amex Platinum will actually let you do a portion as well, but is not customary)
"Leading practice" 😜 is to pay only what's due (the statement balance), exactly on the due date, automatically (link to checking).
I actually have it set up to draft the day after pay clears. Easier for me to think of income deposit dates and expense (rent/Amex) dates to be the same.
Once your statement closes, that's what's due in two weeks. AmEx is a charge card, and technically it's due the day your statement closes with a two week "pay by" date.
Thank you EY1!
Paying off the balance. Wasn't sure how the charge card monthly payment differed (if at all) from a credit card. Thanks!
Shit I've gone months without paying my card. No late fees not sure if it's because it's a corp card and they know it will be paid
@EY1 you actually have a month to pay off the Amex bill after the statement closing date. Amex prefers you pay after 2 weeks, and that's what they suggest on the website, but the terms of the credit card actually give you a month to pay what's due. For example, my statement closing date is April 30. Amex prefers I pay by ~13th, but I actually have until the 30th of may.
Yes, but if you're 30 days late, you get dinged with a 45 day late fee. Ask me about EY maing us delay submission of expenses waiting for a new charge code to be created.... I have the bill to prove it and had to pay the late fee.
