...? What’s the question here? None of the information you provided suggests that you shouldn’t go to them, other than a vague assertion that it doesn’t “seem like the firm has a position”. Otherwise, they told you to go to them first. So... go to them first.
Not sure if you’ve done this, but talk to HR and act like you’re a formal candidate with no experience with the firm. Update your resume, do formal interviews, interview other places, etc.
Some firms will never see you as a lawyer if you’ve worked there in a non-lawyer post—no matter how great you are. Others will only be interested if you have an offer from another firm.
You’re in the friend zone now. They will happily keep you where you are unless you advocate for yourself.

Yes to resume etc. I would also go to a trusted mentor and volunteer to see if you can get any legal assignments. Law clerk work until you get your bar results. I would try now so you can start looking elsewhere if your firm doesnt have an opening.
I should clarify, I am a recently licensed attorney (UBE state) but living in CA.
