Any advice for trying to transition to attorney role after passing bar? Working at a firm in a non-attorney role and doesn’t seem like the firm has a position for me, despite my positive review and consistently positive feedback from associates and partners alike. However, when the idea that I’d be leaving came up, the managing partner said they’d hope I would go to them first. Thoughts?

...? What’s the question here? None of the information you provided suggests that you shouldn’t go to them, other than a vague assertion that it doesn’t “seem like the firm has a position”. Otherwise, they told you to go to them first. So... go to them first.

Not sure if you’ve done this, but talk to HR and act like you’re a formal candidate with no experience with the firm. Update your resume, do formal interviews, interview other places, etc.

Some firms will never see you as a lawyer if you’ve worked there in a non-lawyer post—no matter how great you are. Others will only be interested if you have an offer from another firm.

You’re in the friend zone now. They will happily keep you where you are unless you advocate for yourself.

Yes to resume etc. I would also go to a trusted mentor and volunteer to see if you can get any legal assignments. Law clerk work until you get your bar results. I would try now so you can start looking elsewhere if your firm doesnt have an opening.

I should clarify, I am a recently licensed attorney (UBE state) but living in CA.

I have not been on a project for over 3 months. Since I joined, I have been put in training. The training got extended by a month and now it's close to 4 months since I joined and without a project.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?

Which offer should I accept? Currently staff 2 at big 4 in Tax with CPA license. I want to leave tax ASAP. Both are public companies +1B in revenue and same salary. Offer 1 - staff revenue accountant so reading contracts, speaking with the sales team and legal team, a lot of work at the end of the months to close books and reconcile transactions to make sure we are ASC 606 compliant. This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.

I have an interview for an in house position (only attorney) at a small non-profit focused on conservation easements. I am a transactional associate at a mid sized law firm. The prospect of freedom from the billable hour and contributing to meaningful work are the draws. The cons are that while the salary at the non-profit would only be slightly less than what I am making now, pay increases and opportunities for advancement will be much less than where I am now. Thoughts on making the shift?
