There is no material difference between an implementation consultant and a generalist consultant. Same pay, same development opportunities. Both types of consultants can be staffed on the same studies. There is additional training that implementation consultants get in running large transformation, client coaching and change management.

I would argue that MI has one of the best cultures/support system within the firm.
As an MI person (BA through EM), I never felt that the type of work/pay/promotion was any different than integrative colleagues. It actually allowed me to experiment across industries and find my niche. You might be staffed on longer implementation/transformation projects but that’s about it. You might find some uninformed colleagues who say untrue things about MI just to feel better about themselves- but putting that aside. It’s exactly the same. Once you’re in the AP window, you’ll have to pick an industry or function that is closer to your program (banking, org, Ops), and the two paths will merge.
What type of projects do you implement? This may be extremely naive to ask, but do you implement initiatives that were proposed by the management consulting team? Do you get exposure to senior management at the client?
You ARE the consulting team. There is no “management consulting team”. There is one integrated team. Typically in implementation you lead the up front strategy work / diagnostic phase and then actually see it through to execution. However, I’ve done everything from pure strategy work and DDs to detailed implementation and everything in between. Yes all my main clients have been C-suite and you work with clients across the company from very junior to very senior to implement.
