Do McKinsey (or other MBB) projects always only have one EM staffed on a project? I know that’s how their pricing is structured, but curious if some projects can be top heavy.

There can be multiple EMs on larger teams, but they're managing different parts of the team. For example a client that has 8 team members might have an EM+3 and another EM+3 working on a different problem. Another thing is sometimes you have a JEM who is overseeing one BA or Associates work with an overall EM leading the team.

Got it, thanks. So the pricing structure (EM + 1/2/3/4) is really just a baseline proposal? Projects can be staffed with an assortment of different team structures outside of that?

The pricing structure you refer to is a construct required for government work, where products and prices must be on a schedule.

On commercial projects, we use the right team to get the job done. That can take many many forms. Just a few examples:
- PL+2 or 3: typical for a strategy project, diligence, and many different types of assessments
- P (Principal) + 4-6: most common when parallel work streams are very similar in approach and output. Procurement and org delayering as examples.
- P+2/PL+2/(PL+2): common when two major modules have very different approaches or needs. P and PL(s) run each separately, but the P may lead some of the central tasks and client management and make sure everything hangs together.
- P+1/(PL+3)*5: again common with many parallel work streams, where we are taking a more hands-on role. A multi-BU growth strategy project or PMI as examples. P runs point for central client team with a +1 for PMO or consolidation model.

Most of these would have 2-3 MDs above, often designated as client officer (often most senior), executing officer (often most junior), and/or a subject matter experts. The teams would also include any number of experts (at all levels) who provide ad box input or join specific workshops etc.

An individual’s role on their case team is also somewhat flexible with regard to their actual title. It is common for a C2 to plug-in as a PL in the structures above. Or to skip having an executing officer of the P is quite senior and being groomed to lead the account.

Anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 years. We don’t do PMO for client driven projects. But if we have a team of 30 (or 200), there has to be some sort of PMO.

Yes there is only one EM but can have a separate ED and CD

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!

Anyone aware of any opportunities in Finance or Data Analysis? Currently in the US working as a Financial Analyst, focused on risk and assurance. I have an undergrad in Economics and a MBA.

I was in audit for about 4 years then switched to provisions. I’m now 7 years in and want a more steady schedule. I like the client aspect of public accounting, flexibility and mentoring/training younger associates, but feel pretty meh about tax in general. I’m not doing another busy season even if that means leaving without a job lined up. What does a person do in this situation?
