Any insights on junior lit lateral market in NYC right now? I’m a second year having a hard time getting traction over the past few months. Strong credentials (HLS, ex-McKinsey) but lateraling from public defense is surely part of it…

Junior lit market is tough right now. Have you gotten any interviews?

Keep at it. Sounds like you are making progress.

Second year meaning 2024? There are definitely opportunities but you’re competing against other well credentialed candidates.

Why did you start your career in public defense?

Have you explored clerkships?

Thanks for the reply and your insight. Yes, 2024. And I hear you that it’s competitive and a conservative firm may opt for plug and play candidates. With that said, I know I’ve had far more substantive ownership of litigation work in these 2 years than many big firm juniors and started in PD specifically to sharpen those litigation fundamentals with intensive reps. But I’m sensing that’s not what the market tends to prioritize and yes I’m considering clerkship to help with a pivot for that reason.

I have read all the books but want some hands on experience on the property management side. can we change office within the same city? in my offer letter it is mentioned rga but i want the nearest office.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.

Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer? I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?
