Yes. It’s the same pain you get from doing dishes. I just dealt with the pain until my boys started rolling over, at which time we started changing them on the floor (around 3-4months) and voila - no more back pain. I suppose you can get one of those foam mats for kitchens to place in front of the changing table though.
Dad of 5 here. I had the same issue and the taller changing station is the best thing. We actually used a standard dresser that was about 36" high rather than a changing table. Made for a lot more room to store things and as the kids got older we used it as a dresser instead.
My question is why are you bending over to check? Just grab them by the ankles and lift/roll back towards their head to see underneath. They won't break.
My back hurts from picking him up all the time from low “reach over” locations like crib or playpen as he gets so big and heavy. Not from changing diapers...
