Lake como is easily accessible from Milan. There’s a train from Milan that takes about an hour and costs ~$10. Otherwise you can hire a car service or rent a car and drive yourself. All trips are around an hour
It’s super easy. Take the train directly to Como or Varenna. Only one hour from Milan. Then there’s a very scenic bus for 5 euros max that goes all around the lake to every town. It’s actually two buses: one for each side of the lake. C10 or C30. Or ferry to your town. For example, Varenna has a ferry to Bellagio. Como is very close to Cernobbio; you could cab or take the 2 euro ferry. Varenna is a lovely place to stay, btw.
We rented a car, the view was amazing but it was very scary since roads are tiny and Italians drive very fast. If I go back I would go by train. We stayed in a town close to Bellagio, called Lezzeno, and it was amazing because it felt way more authentic Italian, way less crowds and still close to everything
Was there a few months ago, we took the train to Varenna (super easy from Milan Centrale) and then took the day ferry to Bellagio and some of the other towns in central Lake Como. There are other options if you want to see more of the lake as others have mentioned, but we had the kids with us so we’re fine just hitting 3 towns with more time spent in each.
We traveled with kids 8, 7 and a baby and spent 3 days in Rome, 3 days in Florence, 2 days Milan. Took day trips to Lucca and Lake Como. Kids did really well and the baby was actually pretty easy.
Take the trian and pack a picnic lunch, much easier than trying to rent a car, park, etc.
Obviously, train. Short, affordable, and comfortable journey to and from Como. In addition, two railway companies run between Milan and Como, one from Stazione Centrale and one from Cadorna (If I remember correctly). The one to Cadorna was nearly empty, whereas the one to Centrale was completely filled.
Travel directly from Milan to Varenna via Lecco; Varenna has its own station, so you don't need to go to Como and then take a boat or drive. Hope this helps!
Getting a bus to Milan Central Station (Milano Centrale) and then a train to Como is the simplest route. It will take a lot longer and more work to ride the train from Bergamo to Como.
There are trains that you can take! Am planning a similar trip and have done extensive research as I cannot drive. You can also take some boat trips from there if you want slow but picturesque! Hope you love it!
Hi! Bus service is a great way to move around Lake Como and save some money. If you travel by public transport, you’ll be happy to know that bus stops are just outside the main train stations: there will always be a bus that will take you to your destination.
Hello! By train. Milan central station, just a couple of M2 subway stops from Porta Garibaldi, is where most travelers start their journey to Como.
This route is faster than the other options: after leaving from Milan central station, the train will only make three 3 stops (Monza, Seregno and Como Camerlata) before getting to Como S. Giovanni!
You can take a train directly from Milan to Como Lago Station. But it will take you 30 mins to 2 hours. You can also ride a bus. Most buses traveling to Lake Como from Milan depart from the Centrale bus station in Milan and arrive at the S. Giovanni bus station in Como. To go to other lake towns from here, you can take a local bus, or if you're looking for a fantastic view, you can take a ferry to one of the bigger towns.
Taxi service in Lake Como definitely isn’t one of the cheapest ways to move around, but it sure is one of the quickest. There are several companies that operate in the Lake Como area, both municipal and private. You will find taxi services at the main public transportation hubs, such as train or bus stations.
Take the train. That would be the most convenient way. Take the one that goes to Como Nord Lago. It will only take an hour.
So jealous you're heading out there. I've always wanted to go. I know someone above said the roads are a bit scary, but I would research it more. I always prefer traveling by car just because it gives me more flexibility to stop and explore.
Roads around lake Como are tiny compared to US standard but two cars can always in each direction with no issues. as tourist just avoid weekends as most of locals (Milanese) go to the lake for a day trip and not talking about the motorbikes that might scare more than one driver the way they-have to drive to pass cars A tip not to lose any spot you might love is, especially on the west cost, to always follow directions for the next town on the lake shore. following the main road will lead you in long tunnels that will take away all sight and skip crossing fantastic towns
