That’s about 2.5 hours each way, maybe more depending on traffic.
Coach
Car: each way, looking at around 2hrs plus could be more with traffic
Train: you’d take the Surfliner, but you’re still looking at over 2hrs each way when you factor getting to/from the stations. Also, part of the track is one way, so you’ll expect a lot of delays
TLDR;
Probably not doable everyday. Once a week, maybe.
If you have to do that drive more than once a week you’ll lose your mind. Promise.
Dang, thanks all for the reality check and for confirming that Google Maps lies. If I end up trying to transfer to my firm’s Irvine office, hopefully I’ll have better luck lateraling to a San Diego firm once I’m physically there and barred in CA.
Thanks!
I had a friend that did it twice a week and couldn’t imagine doing it more. 5 days a week would be total hell
I’m thinking about doing the same with San Francisco from Sacramento. Salary bump just too attractive to pass up.
A10 is right. The train from Sac to the Richmond Bart would also work pretty well. Bart can get crowded, but Richmond is the first stop so you’d get a seat. And hopefully you can get it down to once a week over time.
I had a coworker who did this. Idk how bad it was, but prepandemic he came in 3x a week

I’m in San Diego and a few weeks ago it took me 4 hours to drive home from LA. Do not do this.
Just live in OC, OP. I live in SD and love it, but would never do this commute. Traffic here isn't a joke.
Seems like everyone is in agreement here! I’ll look into OC more. What are the popular areas in OC for senior associates to buy houses? Preferably not too far from the beach but also not a crazy commute to Irvine. I probably wouldn’t buy right away, and I realize the market is currently high, but I’d like to get a better sense of whether I want to go forward with the move or stay put.
Thanks!
