Anyone do a career switch ? I am currently in tech consulting and I just graduated in December. I think I’m more interested in the business track. Coding has become very unfulfilling. Any advice?

Hi OP — software engineering can be very social and business oriented. I wouldn’t give up yet — it’s a discipline which is very difficult at first and becomes rewarding over time. The best engineers have a balance of communication and technical skills and often work very closely with clients or large groups of other engineers and most senior and above engineers are involved heavily in strategic decision making. I don’t think a few months is enough to really judge the field as a whole.

I would keep coding. Learn the business for which you are coding. The ability to code will open many doors for you through big favors for others (they will seem hard for them but will be easy for you). More people can bs the business side but can’t on the tech side. If you know how to code and can talk to clients about their business and be able to translate that I to something tangibly technical, you are ahead of 98% of people in this business. My $.02

Make sure you get some certifications done too

Try tech strategy consulting. It ends up blending a bit with strategy consulting. I made the switch with a technical background and haven’t looked back

I also switched to tech strategy, much more fulfilling

Maintain your tech skills and find stretch opportunities to learn client and project management. Being able to do both business and tech will be key moving forward.

M2 is right. A lot of people are in tech. A lot of people work with the business. Surprisingly not a lot of people can’t put the two together at a high level. If you like tech but don’t like to be in the weeds then hang in there. However if you don’t like keeping up with tech at all.. then you may want to exit out as you were thinking - for your long term happiness

What coding are you doing? Very few people code ...

You probably will get a paycut, I think it depends a lot on the type of projects you are taking, look for a lead position in front end client facing products.

Ok cool. I was in your shoes as well. Had a CS and masters in IT. Was a developer then did tech consulting for about 7 years. I felt stuck even after getting my PMP cert, so I decided to do B school with a specific goal in mind of getting into healthcare because that work is fulfilling for me, which is what I’m in now. Find out what u find to be fulfilling outside of work and try to get into that line of work/industry. Good luck

Go for the switch! You worked hard to graduate so congratulations on that! Now it is time to pursue your happiness.

Also, take some time to get inspired — watch some documentaries on the moon landing, spacex, Steve Jobs, Microsoft, Grace Hopper, Alan Turing, Ed Catmull... engineers and computer scientists have done amazing things. It’s not easy but it can be very rewarding.

Is this within the realm of consulting solely? Or are you considering a transition to industry?

Thats great advice thank you!

Are there any fully remote lawfirms, ie you don't have to live in the state they have offices? I work in Healthcare consulting (8 yoe). I'm incredibly passionate about Healthcare and have thought a lot about how to make meaningful changes that keep people healthy and how it can be affordable and accessible to all. I know Google has been operating in the Healthcare market. Anyone here open to connect so I can learn more about its current activities/future plans?
