Anyone else cautious about making friends with non-lawyers at work? How do you balance the relationship?

Someone pinged me for a call today to ask about my thoughts on them joining a board position outside of our company, and I walked them through our COI policy and shared some guidance.

Turns out he just wanted to talk about it as a friend! I’m hesitant to give “friendly” advice when it could be construed as my legal blessing. Thoughts?

Work friends as a lawyer are basically the same as work friends as a non-lawyer. However, if someone at work is seeking personal legal advice, I have no problem giving my thoughts but I stress that I cannot be their personal lawyer and they need to seek a lawyer with that particular area of expertise to get a complete and accurate answer.

You have trust issues

I definitely think that’s the case. Not all of it’s unfounded though at my current company.

Maybe I'm in the same level of distrust as you, but this is a board position. They want you to fix their board issues as a director.

Not saying that it's not above board, but if it isn't, there's a lawyer to either fix the mess or take the fall.

As a friend, I think the board position is an awesome opportunity for him. As a lawyer for the company, I’d need to evaluate if there’s a conflict of interest and might actually be the one making the call as to whether he can accept the role. It’s tough.

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
