“Tone policing is defined as "a conversational tactic that dismisses the ideas being communicated when they are perceived to be delivered in an angry, frustrated, sad, fearful, or otherwise emotionally charged manner." Managers striving to create a workplace based on equity and inclusion must understand how tone policing silences members of marginalized groups and allows discrimination to persist.” https://www-businessinsider-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.businessinsider.com/how-to-identify-and-help-stop-tone-policing-in-workplace-2020-8?amp

She may have had good intentions, but the execution was horrible. It's hard to believe no one questioned this during the planning phase.
Yes, the way my slack channels has been filled with this drama, smh
Give us the ☕️
I read the entire article. My initial thoughts.. I am not deep in the details with Uber's history. I do not think Lee hosted the event with ill intent. I think it's more of a "you share your experience and I'll share mine (or allow others to do the same)." The article says that minority employees don't see an issue with using the term/ label "Karen" to call out behavior, yet they suggest that the event presentation was "tone-deaf". I think not being open to another experience in the workplace is tone-deaf. So, what's the actual "move forward" part of DEI if we're quick to attack vs. discuss.
I’m not sure if you’re serious. Based on the discussions, it’s acknowledged that Karen is just another synonym for racist. Article states “Uber staffers who attended the two events…said they felt they had been lectured on… why “Karen” [racist] was a derogatory term.” Furthermore, “A second questioned why the term Karen shouldn’t be used:…”Like why can’t bad behavior not be called out?””
So you think the minority employees not being open to another’s experience as a racist in the workplace is them being tone deaf??? There doesn’t need to be a “move forward” conversation about this. What is there to discuss in an empathetic manner about people being racist? If white people are really vested in abolishing racism, then racist behaviors and actions should just not be tolerated.
