It depends on the place in my experience. Some rescue groups require a lot more. Shelters/pounds tend to be a bit more chill
It also helps ensure people don't just adopt a dog on a whim only to realize it requires actual work and then try and return it a week later
depends on the shelter. the shelter i wanted to go to wouldn't approve me...i ended up finding a great dog at another shelter. 12 years later, he still puts up with me.
Yes. And I'm so glad they made me do all that. It's tedious but also weeds out people acting on impulse who aren't ready for the responsibility. Also no more paperwork than buying from a breeder. I've done both and am glad the rescues get as much care and attention as when it comes to making sure their owners are capable and kind.
Yeppp. Did the 6 page application, then a week later a phone interview, then 2 weeks later a home check, and now waiting to hear back on confirmation for fostering-to-adopt. It's like adopting a child.
a failed foster is the term for someone fostering a dog who ends up adopting it.
Yuppppp. 7 pages of info and a short essay, but they didn't call any of our references or do a home check. 🤷🏻♀️
Sorry you felt the need to be an ass today Director 1. That was uncalled for.
OHH. 🤦🏼♀️ I'm sorry Director 1. Didn't know the lingo
my money is on Art Director being a failed foster :)
When we adopt my dog (now in puppy heaven) from the SPCA, we had to come back in two weeks if we still wanted him. But our name was on a list having first dibs on him:) Not a lot of paperwork though, but we had to have him neutered within 30 days or something and report back with proof of procedure. Spca gave us the slip for free service at local vet clinic. I have been wanting to adopt for a while but above process in NYC is quite a PITA. I volunteered to foster as wasn't totally sure about jumping to adopt after many years without a dog. That ended up being more complicated than adopting and then they kept asking me to foster cats after I explicitly said that's not an option for me in my profile. Very frustrating, even if I do understand the reasoning behind it (and yes, some are just excessive and potentially detrimental to getting people to go through with it).
Wait, what? Read it 3 times but not following
And if they did all of this for everyone who first bought a dog, then maybe we wouldn't need rescues or shelters
Maybe someone can develop a way for all the various rescue places to share my info. Otherwise I gotta fill out the forms and have home visits for just about every one. Any volunteers?
AD, imaging Gilfoil from Silicon Valley was "fostering" a dog, and he got to approve/reject applicants, plus he'd get to tell all the pretty ladies he was an animal lover. He'd have that dog for 17 years. That, in a nut shell, is the animal sanctuary movement.
I went through Canada , no paperwork, no questions
Canada. The proof that America could work if it wanted to.
Got a dog from a breeder recently. Filled out 6-7 pages of essay answers about my life and what I was looking for in a dog. I'm a big fan of forcing people to evaluate their decision to get a dog. It means adding a family member and should be taken extremely seriously no matter where you are getting the dog from. In end my breeder "chooses the right dog for you" vs letting you choose your pick of litter. Have had him for little over a month now and I think my breeder chose perfectly given my life situation.
Yeah totally agree. Unfortunately it took almost amonth and the dog we wanted was gone
I used to do dog rescue. Some of those people have a legit illness where they pretend to be a foster group and spend their weekends sitting outside pet stores or wherever the adoption event is and rejecting people for their dogs. Some of those people would a foster for years with out placing it. Insane. Go to a shelter.
I've heard of ridiculous vetting processes for adopting dogs and I understand the reasoning behind it. We had to fill out paperwork and have our landlord confirm his building was pet friendly. Nothing out of the ordinary. This was from a humane society.
