Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Dey tuk our jerbs!
Both my husband and I were international students. We both found a job after getting our MBAs in the states. But he didn't get H1B because of the lottery (1/3 of the people each year can get the visa). So now he is a stay at home father and I'm the bread owner. Seriously lottery is not fun.
OP, I think the whole training the replacement piece is overblown or over played in the media by people who are impacted, or don't have enough understanding of how an IT organization works. I was once part of an organization that was outsourced to a company on Spain. The transition period was essentially Knowledge Transfer sessions designed to help them understand the processes the company followed, where to check in code, environment details etc. They were not being trained on SAP, Networking, or Java. All of the folks that were impacted moved on. And this towards the end of the recession, 2010-2011.
UCSF IT workers were told they have four months until they will be let go. Told they had to train their replacements in order to receive their severance. The employees 60 Minutes spoke to made sure to reiterate that they are not mad at their foreign replacements, but rather angry at their company and lobbyists/U.S. government for allowing companies to exploit the intended purpose of H-1B visas.
No offense, but American workers seriously lack relevant skills and than complain. There are problems everywhere, most of the H1B are highly qualified and way above native workers
These particular American workers had to train their replacements. So it wasn't that the replacements had hard to find skills. They were just cheaper labor.
Let me give you a little more context E2. H1b's are forced to relocate their family's pretty frequently to lower travel expenses. Actually, i shouldn't say forced; they have the option to go back to 🇮🇳 because there will be another one of them thirsty/threatened and lined up. As a US Citizen, my options are very different. However this culture is reinforced and extends to different aspects of the work. "We staffed you AND sponsored you, why won't you reciprocate with 12+ hr work days?". It becomes the norm to pull these hours daily, when its generally an ineffective use of time (burnout). I don't know why they do it for their kids when their kids are so resentful of this lifestyle, perhaps because someone else will take this "opportunity for a better life?". Since the average team hours go up, there is significant pressure for you to do the same. People will schedule meetings at 7PM without agendas which can very well go until 10PM. It's a toxic culture/organization. I'm disgusted by my company and can't identify with them. Their excuse is TCS, Syntel, and Cognizant do it too. I realize I have options, so as i'm looking for new opportunities, if someone asks me to stay late and it wasn't because i overcommitted myself, I say, "Sorry, I have a commitment." No one has fired me yet, however my boss's expectations of me often misalign with my vision of reality and my boss is often disappointed in me. It's up or out, but in order to move up, it's expected of me to work longer hours. I did this for a year and did not get promoted due to belle curves and others being up for promotion for much longer than me. Regarding cultural gap, with a team of 50% on H1b, I feel like I'm working in an offshore call center. Some of the savvier green card holders from India expressed the call center feeling first to me. #Crapgemini
Summary please?
Woah that sucks... they should be targeting those who over apply like tata
Companies will offshore with or without h1bs, one of my friend's dad had to fly to Bangalore for 4 weeks to be eligible for severence. Here's a free market and moral question for you- if a small university can save 5 million dollars by moving some of their day to day operations overseas and use that money to fund scholarships, buy equipment for a physics lab or avoid tuition hike, is that a desirable outcome? What if the Cleveland Clinic decides to do it and is able to use the savings to avoid increasing the prices for their services?
There is a lot of bad shit going on with HB1. So many Indians come through on HB1 get exploited.
I guess I like free market, why would we want to give American workers a crutch?
I don't want to go back to my home country because of my job. He doesn't want to stay because he can't work here. We have been struggling for a year!
welcome to crapgemini our projects are typically staffed 50% h1b sponsored. we constantly run the risk of falling into that h1b tax bracket. we sponsor because we can still compensate our resources shit and the combination is much cheaper than hiring an American. this happens in other organizations and it pushes the average household salary and quality of life down (h1b's are willing to forgo salary and time outside of work to remain competitive)
So how is it as a non HB1 at Capgemini? Is it much easier to get by or is it much harder because there is always a cultural gap?
So sorry to hear P2. I wish more of your stories were heard by the general public - there's only negativity out there about you h1b1 holders because of the exploitation by the Indian tech firms.
Cap1, you must be in IT, Cap Consulting doesn't sponsor H1B visas at all
Also Cap Consulting has no "up or out" policy
what i heard was from employees who were in cap consulting.
Also, if you're not in consulting, what're you doing on the consulting fb?
