All you can eat sushi. Toilets that play music. Unlimited ping pong. Summer parties with bouncy castles. Desks that convert into beds so you never leave.
I’ve known people who have gone there and never heard from them again.
It exists
This info is a couple of years old but here is my take: the creative lab is split into groups (or at least it used the be). The kind of work you’re going to be doing really depends what group you’re in - by this I mean if you end up working on the more traditional ad work or on more experimental projects. Then on the ad work - it’s kind of like roulette. You could end up concepting over and over for months. Think endless rips and endless budget. Then suddenly the idea gets killed and it was all for nothing. Or, that idea gets picked up but is given to an outside agency. Or, suddenly it gets put into production and you get a huge TV spot. The process def seems very different there. I don’t have inside knowledge of how the budgets work but no one seems to mind spending money on ‘being creative’ even if it doesn’t lead to anything actually being made. Some people seem to love this but it can be extremely frustrating if you end up with nothing for your book for months at a time.
That makes a tremendous amount of sense, and actually jives with some of my experiences working with Google. (Though not all.) It sounds like, If placed on the right team, there’s a huge opportunity but also a proportionate amount of risk that something never gets made. I really appreciate your help and perspective, thank you so much.
Gotta wear lab coat to work
My lab has a chocolate coat, does that count?
How does one get in? I’ve looked on Google’s career site for years and rarely see a GCL post (esp for planning gigs)
That’s super helpful. I’m freelance but also open to full time, so good to know that I can position myself as freelance first.
