Anyone here in a “pure” counseling practice where you don’t do other things like transactions, litigation, or regulatory investigations? Curious to see whether anyone has made that work in biglaw, especially. I have seen it be challenging to bring in or otherwise have enough work for that kind of practice.

A pure counseling practice is analogous to pure preventative care in medicine. Hard to build a book on that alone, as clients are hesitant to spend BigLaw money on preventative care. Actionable items and issues? Sure! And you can definitely supplement with counseling once you’ve established credibility and trust. But out the gate? That’s tough.

All of the folk, including myself, who practice in privacy or cyber have some kind of blended practice. At the very least, counseling on compliance and dealing with regulatory investigations. But pure counseling tends to be handled by consulting firms.

My privacy practice is mostly counselling and it’s very difficult to meet my target each year.

Appreciate the responses, all. These track what I have experienced. Rough to try to make counseling pay the bills on its own.
