I have never "encouraged" my kids per se. However, they remember not seeing much of me months at a time during busy season working late so that was enough "discouragement" for them unfortunately.

My dad did but as much as he encouraged me, I wanted it more. I never felt pushed or forced into it but his advice was certainly taken into account. I think I made the right move by doing that and choosing accounting and the CPA path

If they seem like they have the aptitude and attitude to enjoy it, absolutely. 2 of my 3 siblings already followed me into accounting in their mid-30s - although they saw the ugly process of public accounting through me, and chose industry.

Many, many people follow parents or other family members into careers, even when seeing the bad sides. I grew up with two career military enlisted parents, plus lots of military aunts/uncles/grandparents/etc. They were gone A LOT, among other normal military stressors on a family. I vowed at a young age to never join or marry into any branch because of my childhood experiences- such as my mom missing three different full years of my childhood ages 5-10 - but I also had siblings (with different aptitudes and interests) choose differently, pursue military careers, and are extremely happy with their own choice. Different things fit different people.

Don't have kids but I do encourage people to understand accounting. Not so you can work in PA. Just because money is a big part of life.

It depends on the school they attend. If tech and consulting jobs recruit from their school, get one of those degrees. No banking or consulting firms recruited from the state school I attended, but big 4 accounting so that's what I studied.

My parents are so mad I did it, wanted me to do medicine or law lol

I encouraged a bunch of at risk high school kids because I told them you can make a decent stable living while sitting comfortably in an office. Even though it is sometime repetitive, there are interesting aspects since the field is so wide - bookkeeping/accounting, auditing, tax, consulting, forensics, etc. And if you are super bored, you can always use that money to buy yourself treats, go on vacay, or fund a hobby on the side.
Neither of my parents were accountants, but I ended up picking CPA specializing in tax because I like learning about businesses (not charismatic to run one though) and law (not putting myself in debt for a law degree that might not guarantee a good return).

My kids see how hard I work in busy season. As a partner I work more than I worked at any other level due to lack of staffing. When they see me work 70 to 85 hours a week for 2.5 months straight there is no way any of them would want to go into accounting. I try to explain that there are other positions in accounting that aren’t so stressful/so many hours but my kids are all going to choose other career paths.

like

Deloitte1 - that would require partners to reduce their own pay, so of course they’ll never support it. Hiring more people reduces hours, increases retention. But then firms get greedy, bring on more work and try to get the same people to do it so they can make more money.

My dad pushed me into it, wanted to study animal science (growing up I was obsessed with different types of animals and what not, also always did well in my science classes). Told me he wouldn’t help out with college unless I studied accounting. I guess I could’ve just taken on more student debt to do what I wanted

My son was deciding to do accounting or finance but I believe he is going to enter as a freshman in finance.

I was a finance major or tracked on an additional major in accounting when I realized only insurance (state farm, etc) and sales companies recruited finance majors from my school.

like

Nope. My son is already in high school and I didn't want him to feel pressured to take the same path that I did. However, I think he is also interested with my line of work because lately he's been asking questions.

Yes. My daughter is in her first year in college. I can't deny that I have been encouraging here since she was younger.

My dad is a CPA. Tried to talk me out if it. Wanted me to go to law school.

My book is just spec and side projects. I’m trying to get a new junior-to-mid role because I’ve gotten nothing good produced where I’m at, and I have zero faith this will change if I stick around.

I’m asked for work samples from recruiters and CDs even though I make clear that what I’ve done doesn’t reflect who I am as a creative. Think CRM/DM/B2B stuff. They insist on it, and I never hear back afterwards.

Not sure what to do. Almost feel like I’d be better off erasing my agency experience.
