Made the switch from pharma agency to big tech this year after working in pharma for 5 years. All I regret is not doing it sooner! I was a SAE and focused on my transferable skills like project management, program management, etc to make the switch in industry! It wasn’t easy but keep searching. I was able to increase my TC by 35k, work remote, and have way better work life balance!
Hi! Do you mind sharing more about your switch? I left my role as an SAE at a very toxic agency and looking to make a switch to tech.
I left pharma for a while then came back (consumer agencies are 5000x more toxic and i didn’t like the work as much). The move to consumer was way easier than I thought - just reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn or cold apply. Your experience is much more applicable than you think & you’ll have developed way better organizational & communication skills than you would have starting out in consumer
Yeah i’m not looking to go into consumer, i’m more so looking to leave the agency life altogether
I was recently in account management at a pharma/healthcare agency and am starting a new role that is not in pharma/healthcare or an agency. I searched companies that I liked and searched for marketing manager, brand manager and project manager roles. I am not going to lie, I felt so lost through out my search but I did not give up. Search for companies in your city since some are hybrid and if you’re lucky some will be remote! If you’re looking to get out of agency life, just keep applying, it is possible but it may not be easy. If you are close to a promotion and don’t mind sticking around pharma agency life, keep it up and then maybe reassess later! I personally did not enjoy pharma or agency life so for me it was a no brainer! I worked in agencies for almost 7 years and I decided to try something new!
I feel like a marketing manager is expected to be a copywriter. SAE1, seems a lot of job descriptions suggest that is the case. Is it?
I have literally just left pharma...basically got it through a recruiter after I started being more active on LinkedIn. Personally, the main thing I focused on during the interviews was the experience rather than the industry and the type of work I was doing - it's all pretty transferable across sectors. I find consumer more interesting for sure BUT I don't think clients are as savvy/smart but that's my initial impression so far
Very true. I went from consumer to pharma and the biggest thing I noticed is the clients know what they want and they’re more invested and as you said, smarter
