apparently the "perfect" salary for happiness is 75k (in 2014, adjusted col...Google it for your state). Anyone who recently started earning their happiness wage actually find themselves more happy?

It's not really a happiness thing. It's basically that if your salary goes up past 75k, your happiness remains stagnant as it relates to increasing income.

like

$75k in NY is poverty

like

Nope. Now if you tell me 750k ill be happy.

like

It's never enough.

like

When you finally make enough money so that you don't have to worry about paying periodical bills it is a relief. I wouldn't say I'm happier though.

like

I'll tell you in three months. Currently make $71k

like

I make a bit less than 75. I of course want more... But at this point, I own a nice home. I have a mostly paid for nice car. I have no student loans, no Credit card debt. I can afford my hobbies. I legitimately make more than I need. the trap we get into is starting to treat our wants as needs.

like

I find this to be mostly true. Except basically anything above that figure goes towards getting rid of my student loans. Once those are paid I would say I'll be pretty god damn happy

like

Yep. I reached happiness at about that amount. I don't have an increase in happiness now that I'm at $150k (but I do have future retirement since I've be stashing tons of money)

like

$76k allows me to buy whatever the hell I want without worrying about it in Baltimore. Moving to D.C. though, that's going to fuck things up

like

If you learn to live on less you can achieve happiness at a lower salary level. I am perfectly happy living my life on 40k - I eat organic foods, drive nice cars I don't owe on, am paying off my home, and am generally capable of doing everything that makes me happy. The salary I earn above that amount goes towards long term investing but doesn't impact my level of happiness overall.

like

Every year I earn more and I'd say it increases happiness to some extent. $75k is quite low for my market, so I definitely would say I've seen a tangible increase in happiness earning $120k over $75k. Allows me to have a nicer place and spend more money doing things that I enjoy.

like

There is some truth to this! Sure caveats if you live in Manhattan or have kids, but to be above $75k does mean you stop looking at the bank statment frequently, worrying about how much it costs to eat out, etc. That's why making manager is a nice promotion to stay in the game for (and longer than that). Keep expenses growth in check while income rises.

like

Totally agree. Once you get over that hump and your necessities are taken care of you are golden. If you make more than 75k or 100k in higher col area and are still struggling it's because you're over extended and causing yourself stress.

like

Uh yea if you live in Kansas or something

like

You're allowed to be poor and happy also. The two are not mutually exclusive.

75k let's me max my Roth 401k and still live comfortably as a single person. I think 100k would make me happy when I have kids.

I agree 100K would be a good number for someone married with kids.

I'm married with kids and just under 75k in a low COL area, which allows us to live semi-comfy on one income. We essentially live paycheck-to-paycheck and have very little savings, but if I could get my wife to control our spending that probably wouldn't be the case.

Hi Everyone!

A company has made an offer and I wanted to understand if i'm being made a fool.

The monthly compensation is 1,37,500 (16,50,000 yearly) and Variable component (Bonus) is 1,50,000.

However in the offer it says "You shall be paid an annual compensation of Rs. 16,50,000/- per annum Cost to Company."

Which to me sounds like it doesn't consider 1,50,000 to be a part of CTC which is suspicious to me.

How should I deal with this?

Thank you!

I’ve been at my company for 8 months. I just found out another designer who has been here for several years gets an annual bonus at the end of the fiscal year. I have never been told about a bonus and haven’t gotten one yet for the previous fiscal year that ended In July. Should I have been told I get a bonus when I signed on or are they typically a surprise?
