This depends typically when you are vested you are the owner that can control what you want to do with them even after leaving. If you have RSUs you have actual stock, if you have NROs or ISOs you have stock options and not the actual stock. Sometimes with RSUs you can’t transfer the position, but you can cash partial or all of them out and do whatever you want with them even if you are no longer in the company. Most of the time whatever is not vested the company can reclaim, however usually no if it is vested.
If you mean from private shareholders, companies can “repurchase” by doing secondaries or tender offers
