As a hiring manager, what goes through your mind when a candidate presents a counter offer for salary?

You've presented a generous offer of employment to a candidate. They take a day to get back to you and present a counter offer. What's going through your mind?

Are you disappointed? Annoyed? Offended? Happy? Impressed?

I mean, I think you always need to expect a counter. That’s just basic “taking a new job 101”. But don’t feel bad to say no, our original offer is our final offer.

You can also make that clear when the offer is initially delivered.

I would hope you would not be having an emotional reaction. Of course they're going to the counter. You would too. Your response should be a business response and not create any bad feelings between you and the candidate that you have vetted and chosen.

like

Experiencing any of those emotions you mentioned is juvenile. It is expected that the candidate will counter. That’s simply negotiation 101.

The money isn’t coming from your pocket. Give it to them anyway! Talent will always be sought after. It is your job to attract and retain not get in your feelings about standard salary negotiations.

I’m absolutely fine if they do - they should, I would. I generally put a 5% into the offer to give space to accommodate it.

My own feeling is neutral, if I’m being honest. I expect candidates already have a sense of their own value and what the market will bear.

On the other hand, I have worked with managers who see a counteroffer as a red flag and immediately withdraw the offer. I think that is kind of cutting one’s nose off to spite one’s face, but it is that manager’s position and that manager’s budget.

Read that McK is paying 2K higher than BCG this year which means BCG will probably raise again next year to at least match. However, they can’t just copy McK with 2K to match because that would look bad so they’ll have to beat it again. Then McK and Bain will follow. Barring a devastating recession, I’m guessing this means MBB is all getting raises again next year?

I’ve worked in sales for 12 years (8 years retail sales and management, 4 years inside tech sales and management). I’m feeling the burn and looking for something else in the tech field. I’m making $140k. I have a college degree but no marketing, engineering, or product experience. What other departments/jobs could I jump to and still keep close to my OTE? I’m pretty good at Salesforce and have thought about a SFDC admin type role, but that’s all I’ve thought of so far.
