As a paralegal, do you want to be cc’ed on all attorney emails with the client, opposing counsel, etc.? What is your preference?

Everything. You can be informed and not be in the dark. Allowing you to be proactive.

Proactive paralegals are awesome! Is it appropriate for an attorney to assume that a paralegal will know what task to complete and will complete that task if they are cc’ed on an email? For instance, attorney/paralegal receive some document via email. Safe to assume that paralegal will automatically calculate/calendar the deadline?

like

Yes, that way I can stay in the loop of the case progress and can get updates about it without needing to bother my attorney unless it’s for a task assigned to me.

Yes. I want to be aware of all communications on a case regardless if I need to do anything stemming from it

like

Agreed. It’s a time saver for both the paralegal and attorney as an entire subsequent conversation between paralegal and attorney doesn’t need to happen, or can be cut down!

Yes because I need to know wth is going on in my cases.

likefunny

I often don’t know wth is going on in all aspects of life! 😂

funny

Yes, everything. Especially in cases with multiple parties/ moving parts.

like

Yes. It makes knowing what’s going on in my cases easier and then if the attorney doesn’t inform me about something it doesn’t matter because I’m hopefully on the email chain.

like

I would say that this is the biggest benefit of being on all emails. Are you asked to save emails to a file?

Yes, because I’m doing the majority of the work 🤣

likesmartfunny

Haha! I can’t disagree with this. Do you handle discovery?

Nope. One less thing to read. Having said that my attorneys are amazing about keeping me in the loop

like

Totally fair! Email traffic alone can be overwhelming in the legal world. How often do you have meetings with your attorneys to ensure awareness of tasks/deadlines?

Yes, too often I end up working in an information vacuum, and it hinders me from exercising any judgement if I am in the dark.

If I can search my email and have everything on a case, that will greatly reduce the amount of questions I will need to ask my attorney.

like

Agreed - this is especially true if the paralegal is helping with written discovery responses. Do you ever help with discovery responses/objections?

like

Yes. All emails.

like

Conviction! I like it!

like

I want in on all communications. The more I'm involved and can invest, the better I am for the firm and the client. These big law firms that treat paralegals like gerbils on a wheel existing only to turn the billable clock are missing the boat!

like

Thissssss! I want to be able to actually help my attorneys and I can’t do that if I’m unaware.

like

All of it. I want/need to be in the know on my cases.

like

Honestly, I would prefer having access to their emails that way if they miss something, I can bring it to their attention and we can avoid situations because they were distracted/busy.

If I can’t have access to emails, I’d definitely want to be copied on all attorney emails that way nothing falls through the cracks - even if the emails are irrelevant or I don’t need to take action on them.

like

Nice! Is that similar to creating templates on Excel? Is it possible to dm on here? I'm working on something called Litidate. com and curious about your thoughts.

I think it depends on your verbal communication w your attorney..if u talkften not necessary if not yes please cgc me on everything

like

Thank you, everyone, for your comments! I would love to chat further about this and other ways to help paralegals to their jobs. If you’re open to it, please dm me! Thank you!!

Yes, I do.

No. Only if important.

Copied on all emails. It allows me to calendar any important follow-ups.

All emails, we copy the entire team. I have a file for every client in my inbox for the cases I work on and the ones I don’t. In the event I need to help out on a case I’m unfamiliar with, I can jump in and help much easier if I know what’s going on.

Additional Posts in Paralegals

Has anyone dealt with a lack of praise from attorneys? I'm not someone who needs to hear "good job" all the time, but we just got a huge deal closed that I worked really hard on and had a lot of overtime. And once it closed, the lead attorney praised the other attorneys, and said nothing about me or my work. I might just be overly sensitive, but it kind of stung. Thoughts?

Paralegals: My firm is looking for a paralegal, and I see the job posting advertising the salary as $65-$75k, with benefits. Is this a good salary for a paralegal (Greater LA area)? I’m not the decision maker, but it’s been a few weeks with very few applicants. I’m curious if there’s something hurting the firm in its search.
