^ this. I have different uses for chase UR points than SPG points so I try to accumulate both depending on what I'm purchasing.
...trying to figure out if it makes sense to cancel all of my hotel cards and simply go for the CSR card
Don't cancel cards. Star points are uniquely valuable for their travel partner transfers you can do, ones that are maybe not part of chases. As always with these questions you need to know what you plan on redeeming for. You have to have a goal, not just hoarding points for the sake of it. Personally I put Starwood on my Starwood card.
First, canceling cards is never a good idea for your credit score. Only hurts.
Second, status is irrelevant for this card decision. With SPG Amex, you earn 2x points that are worth 2.5-3cpp ( or potentially much more) in redemption. That's 5-6% back. With CSR, you earn 3x points worth 1.5-2cpp. That's 4.5-6% back.On average, I still think SPG AMEX is a better deal, but you can see the range is overlap.
The tiebreak for me is that I like having different pools of points for different transfer partners. I rack up tons of Chase UR points on flights and dining. So it's a no-brainer to rack up star points on the AMEX.
I am about to start work and deciding between SPG AMEX and CSR. I will only be putting hotels on the card. Which one do you guys recommend?
BA1: CSR for best overall travel card. Are you staying only at SPG hotels?
I think most consultants do, but I am not 100% sure yet. I think if my first project uses SPG, then I'll get that card first.
OW1: how does your expense policy work? Can you put everything on personal cards like BCG?
@BCG1 - you don't have to use your corporate card? Or do you do a lot of personal travel for which you are not using points..
Ok I hear what you're saying about cancelling, but I have a number of cards with annual fees, and am thinking of cancelling all of them and then just using the CSR to consolidate. I understand it will hit my credit score, but assume it won't be hard to build that back up quickly. Can anyone specifically explain how star points earned by the SPG card have an advantage over the UR points? As mentioned above looks like the valuations of points earned at SPG hotels will be similar between star points and UR points for both cards.
Don't cancel cards with fees - they'll usually be happy to switch you to a no fee card instead with the same line of credit. I consolidate all business expenses on the CSR both to avoid fees elsewhere and for the simplicity value of all expenses on one card
Manager1, how does your firm's expenses work? What can you put on personal cards?
Starpoints are more valuable on the high/average/high end of spectrum. Also, highest value SPG redemptions are SPG hotels. Highest value Chase redemptions are international first class airefare. Need both to maximize both. Also, I'll gladly book hotel suites but not intl first air. Which limits the value of chase points for me.
D1 - personal card
It goes back to what I said first. It all depends on what your aspirational redemptions are. If you're truly going to be on the road a lot, you should have no problem accumulating and diversifying will be a benefit.
