With the latest news on vaccines (including Ebola vaccine helping eradicate disease in DRC!), it got me thinking - what’re the greatest achievements in human history? And where do vaccines rank?

Eradicating polio is up there

Vaccines and medicine is pretty incredible. Life expectancy 200 years ago was almost half of what it is now. Vaccines, antibiotics (penicillin) and other medical discoveries I would think are pretty high on that list.

Otherwise industrial revolution, electricity, people figuring out from lenses and mirrors that we are one of eight planets that orbits a star, that we are one solar system of countless in a galaxy, and one galaxy of countless in the universe...

Vaccines are pretty fucking high up there. Represents humanity's ability to master their environment rather than being at the mercy of the environment.

Granted, every time we figure out how to "win" against mother nature, she figures out how to fuck us over harder the next time. "Eradicated polio? Here, have some AIDS. Got that under control? I created covid just for you!!"

Oh and indoor plumbing, esp. in winter.

Maybe after looking at all these answers will we realize how trivial our work actually is lol

Idk. My firm did some great stuff for some companies in the financial and life sciences industries when COVID hit. I think think that was worthwhile. But the work I do? 💯 not critical to humanity.

Highly recommend the book Enlightenment Now if you want to learn more about the greatest human achievements and the progress we have made as a civilization

Air conditioning.
Cigars.
Coffee.
Breads and Pasta.
Wine.
Whisky.
Day after pill.

One people don't think about often is the washing machine- many women worldwide have been freed from domestic chores because this one very timely chores is now automated.

I’m amazed by the concept of underwater tunnels for car transport (ex: English Channel tunnel)... thanks smart folks!

Fertilizers! Man made fertilizers have helped avert famine. The population growth of the 20th century wouldn't have been possible without them.

Not really, but ok.

Going to the moon, literally the greatest achievement of Nanking with no room for argument

*mankind*

Internal combustion engine has to be on any shortlist too.

Never had much contact with my dad, and two years ago, I broke off contact with my mother because I realized that she had been a manipulative narcissist my entire childhood.

Working 50-60h weeks on average doesn’t help your dating life though, and who would want to date someone with no family anyway

USI folks - Do you know if the Sum assured of the health insurance offered by Deloitte is for per year or total. Context, I am currently at Deloitte US and thinking of requesting a USI transfer because of a serious health issue for one of my parents. Would be really thankful if someone can clarify 1)Will parents existing conditions/treatment (Chemotherapy ) be covered from my day of joining and 2) Will sum assured will reset every year (if yes, then when, January or our FY). Thank you

We got back to it and have been trying for the last 2 months again, still no luck. We’re freaking out… all we want is a family. Any similar stories? Advice? 😢
