Good morning. I am currently a senior associate in BugLaw, and I have applied to several trial attorney jobs in Chicago offices of federal agencies since the start of the pandemic. According to usajobs.gov, my applications to the DOJ and CFTC were “referred,” and my application to the SEC was received and my GS scale verified. But I haven’t received any updates on these applications in over a month. Does anyone here have any insights on these or on federal hiring generally? Thanks!

I pretend I don't know and wish them the best with the process... As generic and kind as possible
Thank them for their thank you email. Then be sure to downgrade them if they don’t thank you for your thank you to their thank you.
I’d never respond to a thank you email.
“You’re welcome. Pleasure meeting you as well."
‘The pleasure was all mine! The very best of luck with your exams/process.’ And respond to any questions they might be asking about timeline, feedback, company or refer them to the right person e.g., recruiter to answer the question.
Never respond to the thank you email. Interviewer 101.
I have never expected one in the past but now am the person doing the interviewing and will send a brief note back wishing them luck in the process. I don’t think it matters much either way but I know the dreaded feeling when interviewing...so I do try and give back what I wish I had during my own process years ago.
I always reply to thank you emails. I consider it discourteous not to do so. You need not lead the person along in order to be professional.
Typically, in consulting, the custom is that as an interviewer you will offer the candidate direct feedback.
If you haven't already provided that, use the thank you to wish them the best through their recruitment process, reiterating that they are interviewing you as much as you are interviewing them.
To those that said it, why wouldn't you respond to a thank you note?
Ive never gotten a reply back- ever - for my thank you emails.
KPMG2 Wrong
Director 1 it’s common business etiquette
I don’t reply
So if they did do well, then you would respond? If the recruiter hasnt said anything, I wouldnt want to disclose anything.
@k1 But what happens if you know they didnt make it? I wouldnt want to lie and say good luck with the interview process, if they arent moving on.
BCG1 nailed it
Once had someone write a really good thank you email and almost second guessed myself about dinging them but ultimately didn’t change my mind.
Lesson: Thank you emails are a waste of time and rarely help but could always hurt.
I never respond. That’s the job of recruiting
I only reply when we’ve passed them on and I anticipate they’ll have multiple offers. Never too early to start getting their yes.
