Velocity is easy if you think about it. Take a car. How far does it travel (60miled) over what timeframe (1hr). Velocity is 60mph.

^SC2 is right. velocity is a vector, speed is a scalar

“Formula” for velocity?
There is no formula for velocity. Velocity is definitionally the rate of change of position, and that is the point. What BCG is filtering for is folks who can think about and understand the relationship between different numbers — how you might predict one will change when you know how another one is changing. We use this kind of numeracy literally every day in strategy consulting — you think about whether prices or volumes or costs should go up or down if X were to happen.
It’s not about knowing physics or trigonometry. It’s about basic numeracy. If you can’t figure out that “miles per hour” must mean that it’s a ratio with miles on the top and hours on the bottom, you’re not going to be successful as a strategy consultant.

The ideal gas law isn’t physics, precisely because it cannot be explained from first principles. It’s an empirically observed set of ratios between different physical properties we’ve chosen to name. It’s possible to make a set of rough assumptions that let you intuit your way into how some of the relationships work, but that’s all.
You can derive almost all of physics from the quantum field theory formulation of the Standard Model — some of the fundamental particle masses and the mixing angles between the quark generations being pretty much the only factors you have to tune. You can do similar things starting with General Relativity. (You can’t do both at the same time, since we don’t have a unified theory, but all that tells us is that we’re not done figuring out physics yet.

If your friend doesn’t know what the formula for velocity or basic trigonometry, how the f*** did they pass high school?
EY2 that’s speed. Velocity has a direction component as well. Do you know what that equation is?
And love Pythagoras and his (Pythagorean) theorem. A^2 + B^2 = C^2.
Yeah, once someone I was interviewing only knew pi out to like 11 digits. I told them the interview was over, thanks for wasting my time
Hmmm. Someone missed a soulmate.

Lol this thread is hysterical.
And so many of you clowns are dying to work with these types of people at MBB 🤣🤣🤣

Comp chem! It feels foreign to me now, but I spent a few years with DFTs, MPT, SAPT, CC 🤘🏻
If you are traveling at a speed of 60 miles per hour, how far did you travel in 60 mins?
My speed was 60 MPH. That was t my velocity. But most ignorant folks use the terms interchangeably but are wrong.

I would just get up at that point lol

I was more stressed about the trig, but tbh just never thought about velocity either
Hmm… thinking to myself whether this is the stupidest thread I’ve come across.
Answer: Yes
At least I have achieved something
It’s called weeding out the people who didn’t prepare at all. Velocity is basic stuff.
Any adult not being able to define velocity is scary. Like a hint is what is the unit of speed you see in your car? It’s right there - distance per unit of time.
I don’t think that you’re in touch with reality
I am curious if someone passed that test? If this is not job related, I do not see a point of this test.
Chief
I’m conflicted.
On one hand, velocity is just the vector version of speed, and is pretty easy to calculate. And I have a feeling the trig was no harder than SOH CAH TOA.
On the other hand, if it’s so simple that a grade schooler would do it for homework then what could it possibly tell an interviewer about an interviewee’s abilities as a consultant?
SM2….that’s a dumb way to filter for strategy consulting work. If I was asked to do this I’d laugh at the interviewer. I take my career too seriously to be interviewed like a grade schooler
I’m wondering if they actually had to know this stuff off the top of their head, or if enough info was provided they could derive any math needed from what was provided. I’m leaning toward the latter.

And here I was getting ready to play around with the McK EM working on my work stream when I got back to work.

Trick question, only the Accenture logo has greater-than sign. KPMG just IS
Pull out your phone and google it.
Say jokingly, “My conclusions are always researched”
You get what I’m saying
But for real tho
I don’t know about BCG. But in most cases they are testing your critical thinking, applying what you do know to solving a problem (and communicating )
Velocity formula is pretty simple - how can you not know? 🥲
Velocity = rate of acceleration / seconds
Rising Star
Displacement/time
This is terrifying because I wanna apply to McKinsey lol
I hate this question because there is no single equation for velocity. There’s the definition, which is change in distance over time, but there’s no single equation.
Chief
I suspect that they didn’t explicitly ask for the “formula” but rather it required them to calculate the velocity to be able to solve the brain teaser
