At what point do you stop using TurboTax and get a real accountant to do your taxes? And what has been the best way to find a solid accountant?

Its really not hard to use software if you are w-2 and dont have assets or investments more complicated than the stock market

like

Ask everyone you know for names. If they don’t call you back quickly, move on down the list. Find someone who uses technology well and charges a flat fee unless you have K-1 or investment properties. You won’t regret it. Also, you can probably use a tax preparer and save money on an accountant.

like

If your return is capable of being prepared by a a "tax preparer" who is not an accountant, you are probably capable of doing it yourself.

Still using freetaxUSA with hhi > $1M. As long as you’re not k1, taxes are relatively straightforward. It’s mostly walking through forms.

like

Freetaxusa doesn’t have free state e-filing but that’s the only downside. And e-filing the state is still cheaper than TurboTax, or you have the option to print and mail your return at no extra cost. It’s pretty much the same, just walks you through questions to get all your forms populated. FreeTaxUSA is the way to go unless you have something really complicated.

When you are K-1 . . . Ask other partners because they are in the same boat. That said have found TurboTax does not always do a good job describing all tax situations and sometimes have to pull the IRS publication. Also have had to manually go into "forms" mode before when TurboTax was messing up. For most nonK1 situations though you should be able to navigate your way through the IRS publications with questions

For me, it was the first year I owned a home (thanks mortgage interest) and was able to itemize deductions alongside charitable gifts and other deductible expenses. I’d much rather pay someone a flat fee to make sure that is done appropriately. Ask a partner at your firm for a referral. That’s how I landed my accountant. If referred by a partner, I think the accountant is much more likely to take on a senior associate (assuming they’ll be working with your K-1s in the future).

Don’t remember the year but around when I got married and we had 2 incomes. The best way to find a solid accountant is asking partners who they use. The fact that you’re asking the question means you’re close to making the change.

I am sick of being a realtor! I've been trying for 5 years and have only sold 3 houses. Where I'm from (small Southern town) nobody is buying. Most people's families already own homes and it's just a bummer to see all these nice houses deteriorating over time.

Thoughts on long-term (5-30 years) fate of the market for consulting in London? I’m considering a move from outside UK but some have argued that London market is “just a fight over the increasingly diminishing pie”, despite the temporary uptick in consulting work now to deal with corona& Brexit. Perhaps I should hit Asia or US.

Not my ideal exit but I accepted an offer at another Big4 for a 26 percent hike in base.
Ideally I’d exit to industry in Product/Program manager role but I really needed out and this came up so I took it. And Im on H1B so I cant keep interviewing/accept a better offer if it comes up, once the transfer is initiated.
I can’t decide if Im happy or sad. I’m relieved for now.

Former big law associate here who burned out. Now a corporate inhouse counsel.

Been recovering and considering going back to actual legal practice.

I feel I need a new practice area.

Any suggestions?

What can a junior associate do about a mid-level that constantly asks questions about things they were cc’d on, sends dozens of piecemeal emails and is generally just super high strung and needs everything right away?? No other mid-levels I’ve worked with act this way and this individual I’m working with is driving me insane and I’ve spent countless hours attaching emails and saying “as explained in the attached email…”

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
