At what point in the year would a firm generally be willing to guarantee full end of year bonus to a lateral? I want to time my move with lower hours at current firm but guaranteed end of year bonus at new firm 😈

It depends on your credentials and how in-demand your practice is. I had a 2021 JD start in November 2025 and have her 2025 bonus guaranteed, even though she was only there for two months.

I’m a midlevel in tax, started at my new firm in November and had a guaranteed full end of year bonus.

Also had the special bonus.

To be safe, you’d want a start date no later than September

I started the week bonuses were given out (in December), and I got guaranteed bonus and special lol

Started in September and had my bonus guaranteed. Not sure how much later than that I could’ve pushed it.

I think the other people in this thread, while accurate, might be reading your question wrong. Is the question how EARLY you could lateral and still get a bonus guaranteed? Like, you want to move in March and still get a bonus guaranteed for end of year even though you’ll have 9 months to work and probably a review too??

August 1 for me and got it guaranteed

Just signed the outside employment form in KPMG onboarding system. I actually wanted to start dabbling in creative writing as a potentially monetizable hobby, but I'm guessing this may pose issues.

Definitely interested in the "exception from this policy may be requested if provision of non-professional services doesn't interfere with one's duties of causes conflict of interest" clause, though. Has anyone been able to get one of those before?

I’ve been having a bit of trouble working with one partner at a new firm. There are definitely things I can/need to work on for improvement, but I’ve been practicing for four years and have had no trouble with other partners/peers before. This partner sent an email to me with bills for one client of his/hers I worked on and now looped in a practice management person to have a ‘management call’ (prob to talk about billing less..) Should I be looking for other opportunities?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart
