Principal is SM at B4
Assoc director is in expert track (subject matter expert), think junior partner level. Principal is level below that, either in generalist or expert track.
Thanks a lot bcg2. Really appreciate you being so responsive :-)
AD doesn’t not typically have a path to Partner but will be paid the same as (or more than) most Principals. Much less commercial focus than a generalist-track Principal
Related question - where in the hierarchy does principal fall? I’m currently at the start of the interviewing process so wanted to get a sense of whether it’s in line with the level I’m looking for.
Thanks P1!
Thanks bcg 1 & 2. Makes my decision easier knowing that an AD doesn’t lead to partner. Much appreciated
Full disclosure: There are recent counter examples that may suggest the model is growing at least a bit more flexible, but I’d still consider them exceptional cases. If you’re dead set on partner track though, I wouldn’t assume you’ll have a path from AD. That said, many ADs love the model (comp is similar to peers - $300-600k ) and commercial expectations are very low
Thanks BCG2
Quick follow up-the website says AD/ director. Is director not the same as partner?
Nope
Director is Partner level expert track. Non equity though overall comp range overlaps with Partner. Again, low commercial accountability
Thanks
As a follow up, for the expert track, how different is the principal role to an AD? Currently trying to negotiate, I’m a principal (jr. partner equivalent) at my current firm (non big 4, well known) have been in my role for over a year (as a principal) in the commercial track. I feel switching to the expert track plus taking a “step back” is too much of an ask. TBH have really enjoyed my convos with the BCG folks so far
To clarify, I’m being offered principal in the expert track, which sounds more like a senior manager role in the commercial track. Thanks
ECT Principal is SM equivalent. Client facing, but not partner-track. That said, total comp is still $350-550k with the recent across the board bump.
