My wife is bi-racial (black and white) and has had this problem. (Except for the hispanic part. Because most think she is Puerto Rican). With that being said, she aligns herself with good people who accept her for her and not her race. You have to do the same. Were you raised in a black community? We have our hangups but the community is very accepting.
What do you mean by “switch up on me”?
It sounds like you’re more concerned with how other people see you rather than just being true to how you feel internally. I’m hearing a lot of generalizations as well. I’m sure all of the Hispanics don’t hate your blackness. Try working on being more confident and establish a positive view of yourself instead of worrying about how others view you. I’m sure you’re an amazing person.
Something I recalled hearing in 2020 was that individuals of multiracial backgrounds are often marginalized by each community they've identified with. Colorism is a real thing.
I'm 43 and have experienced similar leading me to a place where I feel like I've gaslighted myself for years into thinking that the treatment I received couldn't possibly be race-related. I was an award-winning employee and if I ever made any mistake or had a personal emergency once in a blue moon, those were grounds for either calling the cops to my house or providing a retaliatory performance review that didn't speak to all the goals I accomplished nor positive feedback from my colleagues. After 20 years in marketing tech industry, I finally called it out and experienced egregious retaliation as a result.
Navigating this space is not easy. The best I've found myself to be able to do is document when there are issues that seem discriminatory and consulting an employment lawyer. You have to choose what is right for you but at the same time try to protect your peace by seeking employment elsewhere if you're being subjected to unfair treatment because you deserve better. Discrimination of any sort takes it out of us all. It wears your confidence down and negatively impacts all aspects of our health.
Strictly associated with my nationality being first gen but I wasn’t expecting to encounter so much colorism here at work and people from both sides try to invalidate my experience. I’m not quite sure how I can avoid more intergenerational trauma with this and how to align myself to have a supportive community at work and in my social life.
