It’s just a title. If the new opportunity is better, go for it. One thing I’ve learned about being in consulting is that the firm will ALWAYS take you back.
Of course, we’re the asset that goes out and whores ourself and make money for the partners. Why wouldn’t our pimps take us back?
Why do you need the manager promo if you are set on leaving?
Yes, no one cares. Bottom line, it comes down to your value and how much you get paid for it

Don’t get confused by the title. Director may be the same as manager in other places. Such as industry
How long is the delay ?
Have you already received an offer? If so you can try negotiating the start date by saying you want to wrap up your current projects and not leave your teams hanging etc. Then see what they say. They may be ok with it or they may say they need someone soon so take it or leave it. If they really like you they should be able to extend the offer a month or two, assuming that’s how long it will take for your promo.
How'd you find the opportunity?
There will always be roles out there for you....follow your intuition which is telling you to stay until you’re promoted so no one ever thinks you were counseled out
I’d suggest you take stock in your director opportunity while waiting on a manager promo. Not to say you’re jumping at smoke but...are you jumping at smoke?
Is it pre-seed? What stage of the start up? What industry? Seems like an irrationally huge jump.
