I’m at a small firm now (have worked at B4 and T20 firms previously) and I like it a lot. I work primarily with one partner, so I’m not getting passed around between teams and I know what to expect. We get along well, he’s very available to help and wants me to succeed. I enjoy working with local entrepreneurs and small businesses. Just feels good to do work for clients like that. I’m probably not learning at the pace that I was in B4 but I also am content with that for now.
It's team specific. I have had vastly different experiences within the same SSL at EY, depending on the partner
This 👆🏻… at EY, Deloitte, and PwC. And in industry.
What you are looking for honestly? Work life balance?
Yeah, I really loved my old group/team/clients (spent 10 years there) but the firm itself made a lot of changes that I wasn’t happy with, I wasn’t happy with my raise for senior manager and the work/life balance wasn’t there, so decided to try the industry life and realizing I miss public and being a client server. Part of me wants to go back to the old firm, but I’ve never really considered what else is out there, so trying to get feedback!
Do not love. Would definitely do your research before jumping back in.
that’s the point of this post.. doing research!
You need to fist isolate geography and sub DU in each firm. Each one is going to have its own dynamics. When I was at Crowe still my group in my office was great. But in Chicago it was toxic and the group imploded. It’s going to vary greatly. Overall I’d avoid any company that took or planning to take PE money.
Why do you hate industry?
The work is really boring, my boss is a micromanager (not just to me, but also the other team members who have been there 10-15 years). It’s 5 days in office which I was fine with, but there’s no flexibility - you need to take PTO for doctors appointments, etc. I didn’t really think I needed to ask about flexibility because I assumed most places were now!
I’m the first person to join the team that didn’t start there and no one has kids, so everyone else is just used to it.
I know this is a very specific experience and industry isn’t like that all around, but since being here I’ve realized I enjoy being a client server and talking to clients.. along with the flexibility.
