Big4, especially assurance, is a scam where there is an expectation to perform at a level you’re not compensated for. This is true across the ranks but also across service lines. Or maybe I am the crazy one?

Most Big 4 Organizations want you to demonstrate that you can successfully do the job at the next level up (not everything perfectly yet) before they want to promote and pay you for that higher level.

Then, once you're promoted to and working in in the role at that higher level, they're expecting you to receive required training as you refine your skills and knowledge for that next level as you build new capabilities (e.g., account management, sales, etc.) for the next level up from there.

That is true in any job I’ve had. Big 4 or industry

like

Ok so tell me if there’s ever any thought about this. I get how it happens, Bunch of nerds that would choose a high rating over a 50% raise

like

Agreed. Especially now where there’s belt-tightening and layoffs, you really have to watch your back to make sure you don’t get backstabbed, or stabbed in the front. If things go wrong, somebody’s getting thrown under the bus

like

Maybe there is a world where bosses would just promote people and pray that they'd perform but we weren't in it...

Call me crazy but if they promote and you couldn't cut it then what? Are you comfortable taking a demotion or paycut?

like

I’ve seen tons of people who think they can handle the next level and failed miserably. When you’re an associate doing a senior job or a senior doing a manager job, the standard is not the same. You don’t have to meet the standard of the next level up, but we get to see your potential. When we promote you, you are held to that higher standard. You run a very real risk of failure and will be held accountable for that.

It’s better for everyone in the long run to be able to try it out before getting promoted.

Example - I’m in audit and a few months ago pulled into a large consulting project. I’m supervising risk consultants on a controls workstream that are making more than me

like

AS1 - pwc must just enjoy being underpaid and apparently also thinks all consultants are ignorant.

Not looking for a promotion. Facts are that I’m giving weekly CFO status updates and assigning/reviewing work to a team that is more highly compensated than myself. Give me a raise or I’ll happily go back to reviewing payroll analytics

funny

Assurance is a joke. It's just glorified fact checkers. Risk consultants are just glorified Assurance. Same thing with different title. Difference is risk deliverable is a PowerPoint while Assurance is a workpaper. Regardless both are tps reports and both Assurance and risk consultants know next to nothing about the tech they are assessing.

like

M1, audits can provide value occasionally. I’ve had clients not capitalize labor into inventory before lol. There are also other areas in “assurance” that can provide value, albeit most of the time it is not likely and is just a cost to obtain/maintain debt. Big picture you can just “add value” by allowing the client to obtain debt to help with cashflows/acquisitions

It’s like this everywhere

like

Anything new you wanna add? 😂😂 Think about this, all the problem you raise is because of clients. Only if clients pay us what we are worth then all of this will be solved. But in the quest of winning clients to make a partner look good internally and externally every firm compromises, both on their true fee and quality of service, and that attitude has a trickling down effect.

Nah you're not crazy at all, you're right 💯

Facts. Better negotiate the hell out of your compensation because they will take advantage of you.

That’s true for every job. Most departments in and outside of accounting and finance are trying to do more with less people.

Do more with less people onshore.

I am seeking new employment, I was recently laid off due to lack of work. I would very much appreciate any leads. I have a Bs in Construction Management and over 15 years experience with Revit and AutoCAD and 7 years of plumbing design. I have solid references and impeccable work ethic. I truly enjoy what I do. Working remotely the last three years has become a way of my life and supports our current situation well, therefore I am seeking a similar role but will consider other opportunities.
