No right answer, but it really depends on what your long-term plan is and frankly I think boils down to how much you want to be in the US in the long run (if so, take B4). There’s no guarantee you can transfer to US with MBB (even if there’s a process, it’s not always easy on a permanent basis). With Bain this is very difficult. With all of them, it’s basically impossible if there’s a performance issue, which is a very real concern with any of them. Honestly, I think it’s unlikely. Only exception is if your spouse moves to the US. NYC especially is extremely difficult to transfer to (at least at Bain).
If US isn’t that important to you then take MBB.
OP there really aren’t title bumps/promotions going on right now. Many employers aren’t sponsoring work permits.
I would stick with MBB unless you are open to lots of risk. Being on a foreign work visa will not shield you from layoffs.
Idk why anyone who already has a nice job in their own country would want to move to the US at this time. If you haven’t noticed, immigration is looked down upon and criminalized or made difficult even when it’s legal. You will have limited upward mobility because you’re not a US citizen. The US provided big opportunities to people decades ago but I don’t think there’s that much going on here anymore except in some niche areas. Consulting isn’t one of them. Ask yourself what you want from your life and make a decision based off that. If you really want to experience post-capitalism dystopia for some fake career prestige in an industry that is not doing well anymore, come on over
No I’m from the US so I don’t have any visa issues but I’ve see how all this has impacted some of my friends from Asian countries and it sucks. Companies ghost strong US candidates these days too, they really don’t care. And pay is getting worse because they know people will take the job even if they’re being more exploited
No career upside due to visa level constraints.
Well noted and I apreciate your advice. I get where you are coming from but im more leaning towards going to the US because the experience, whether its a year to several, will give me boost when I come back home or to Asia.
I see that visa, perm all that is going to drag on for years. At worst, ill just give a try and come back if it sucks. I dont believe in American dream and its obv fading, but there might be more regrets if I dont take the chance now. Appreciate your advice and hope you have found your way to settle well
Go MBB, and transfer office internally at BCG this is super common
Just to continue, i know US job market sucks right now but tryna look at this as if its long term game. Im not looking to permanently move to States. Obv MBB is a great name to add to my resume. But my home counntry is much smaller market, not much upward mobility. Am i delusional?
No major financial concern living in NYC, no plan to do MBA.
Pro
you should ask about the transfer process for MBB, see if you can work at MBB for a year or two before asking to transfer to the US
Thanks. It took me a while to figure and sort this out in Big4 and knowing how difficult things were, I personally would not bet for MBB transfer at all tbh.
"digital arm" of MBB - Platinion? If so, that's vastly different from having BCG on your resume and Platinion is actually equivalent to Accenture / B4, so you aren't comparing a B4 in NYC v. MBB in local. You are comparing a B4 in NYC v. B4 in local office. Where you go is entirely a personal decision.
Not plantinion. Its different one. Pay is similar to regular consulting as far as I understand
You’d likely net significantly more in USD in big4 in US than even MBB in Asia no? So worth calculating how much you’d save (based on cost of living) in each - a few years in the US might even set you really well for retirement in Asia if you manage costs while state side
Thanks McK. I have a decent mumber of friends/alumni from high school and college in NYC tech/finance. But to follow up on that, what network are you referring to. Just enough to grt referral or has enough power to vouch for me to get hired?
Visa is something out of my control so will just have to pray lol
Industry exposure, learning curve and payscale would be better in the US. Once you get your EB-2/EB-3, which really isn't that long a wait, you'll be free to switch to any employer anywhere. The process of getting the US transfer must not have been easy, I'm sure. Don't let this opportunity go wasted.
Thank you, ive looked at the EB2 process and it seems like a hassle but i hope qualifying as ROW will help it not to drag on forever.
It's definitely been a difficult process navigating all the internal politics and actually initiating the process, took a lot more than i expected.
If I had known how difficult this is, I wouldve not even started. Interviewing with MBB was in fact attempt to hedge against in case this process falls through.. and then got offer haha.
Big 4. I did two years at Big 4 in NY at large banks, and it changed my entire trajectory.
Hey thanks. Mind elaborating bit more? Any advice appreciated
Is this mck digital?
