Burned out. Actively searching for industry job for 4 months... 0 interviews 😰 Consulting is starting to feel like a black hole. Just me?

sorry that you’re struggling, OP.
It took me 6 months of applying, interviewing and networking to finally get an offer. By the grace of God it’s a great offer. But it took some grit, patience and so much rejection to get here. Keep knocking, one of your doors will open!!

likeuplifting

@sc 1- what industry are you in as I am in similar position as op

like

That’s discouraging. I was industry side for 4 years then went through the grueling process of getting into consulting and thought that would be the hardest process and going from consulting back to industry in a couple years would be a cake walk. Guess I need to reset my expectations

like

Eh I think it depends where you want to go back to and what your expectations are. If you’re looking at competitive corporate strategy roles at a tech firm for example, it may be even harder than consulting recruiting

Hang in there! I’m in the same boat. Applied to about 40 jobs in the last 4 months, had one offer that was serious low balling, so turned that down. Now it’s been so discouraging I wish I took the crappy offer. But I’m trying to look forward and being optimistic. Besides, Q1 should be better for hiring I think.

I’m an SC. 6 years consulting experience, 3 in current field. Targeting mostly experienced staff positions (e.g. sr analyst) and a few manager positions where I feel qualified.

I am limited somewhat geographically to large metro areas due to my wife’s work, but that is where I prefer to be anyways.

Thanks for the encouragement! It is greatly needed and appreciated.

like

Kinda like dating, it just takes one yes. Hang in there. Also, you’re over qualified for positions (probably is the problem) - aim higher, you know more than you think.

like

Searching for 4 months w no interviews is very stressful. As a consultant at D you likely have skills that a lot of companies would like to employ. Have you considered reaching out to external recruiters? They can help you get interviews since they have connections at so many places. Many companies are finalizing their recruiting budgets now so hopefully many more roles open up

like

I am in tech (product management to be specific)

like

Same boat as you OP. I’ve started to wake up earlier, apply for jobs, and then apply for more before bed. Like SC1 said, it takes a while and a ton of them before one sticks

like

D3 are you just dropping resumes or are you actually reaching out to the companies first? I feel like you’re doing something wrong.

helpful

Same here OP. Been interviewing since September but nothing has stuck. Really hoping the process I’m currently in works out, it’s the dream one after all

like

With 6 years of experience, I think it’s reasonable to target manager roles in the industry.

like

What’s your experience? Where are you looking?

Leave and then go full time recruiting

OP - what is your current level/ experience and what are you targeting in industry?

Hang in there, it took me about a year (my 3rd year in consulting) to realize consulting wasn't for me.

I was comfortable but felt like I wasn't learning or being challenged after a while cause I was on a long term project. Spent about 3-4 months trying to land an interview, once I did, I received an offer about a month later.

I'm still happy with my decision a couple years later.

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)

What's triggering you to feel exhausted, negative, or lose your motivation?

We all start our jobs full of hope and promise. That same hope and promise may still be there. However, the eventual grind or consistent overcommitment of anything will trigger you towards Burnout if you are not aware of them.

Be aware if you are consistently over-committing to something that will burn you out. Take breaks. Change your patterns. Whatever you need to do. Just don't overdo it.
