As a senior manager, I think you are already pigeonholed...
Yeah 7 years and have no experience other than tax, seems a little late to pivot unless willing to take a more entry level position
I was at ey doing tax for 6ish yrs and am in industry now. I am happier - better work/life balance and better pay. I do moss the ppl at ey tho.
Two of my friends left to do something completely different.
1 left after 2 yrs to go to a coding bootcamp and now works at adobe - he loves it.
Another did a leave of absence at ey and finished AI bootcamp 2 months ago - leaving to do something completely diff. He was a sm1
That explains Adobe’s subpar products.
What type of job would you leave for, if not Tax?
OP: I am in the same situation. The money kept me in PA too long and I started if hate my job during the last two years. I am not sure what job I can take outside of PA that would no involve a pay cut. I will start looking at MD positions at 2nd and 3rd tier firms. And, I definitely don’t want to be a partner anywhere. Keeps us posted on your progress and ideas. Good luck
I feel the same way as you OP and I’m a senior accountant. I was looking to leave rather hard, then today found out I’m likely making manager this year. Any tips for someone 5 years in so they don’t end up with regrets like you have?
It really depends on what you are trying to go for. If you want to go to industry having manager only helps you. You’d likely be able to get in at a manager level. If you want to change careers then no it won’t help and you should leave.
What I always tell people is there are two times to leave. After you’ve done one year as senior because now you have the senior experience and you’ll get the same jobs you’d get over the next two years or after your first year as manager for the same reason. There are some people/roles in industry that will only look for people who were manager and up in public. To me it helps set you apart from the other throngs on public accounting senior associates always looking for new jobs.
