honestly, chances are if you’ve never heard of them, you might not be a good fit. based on what i read here, they tend to gravitate toward candidates who have experience or education in the areas they focus on. they do a lot of corporate restructuring/turnaround/M&A work. lots of experienced hires and MBA grads. good comp with fat bonuses. long work hours. competitive with MBB/A&M in their practice areas. founded by jay alix, a billionaire who made headlines recently for suing mckinsey for supposed conflicts of interest. going out on a limb here and suggesting that for you, best way to break in would probably be via a good MBA.

I’m interviewing for in-house and firm roles and I’m not sure how to navigate the compensation issue. My first job out of law school was with a state regulatory agency so comp was slotted and basically limited to salary and PTO. What should I be looking for when I interview in-house? With a firm? I don’t want to leave compensation on the table and end up feeling undervalued later.

General question: can you change the culture of a 4,000 personal organization in 3 months? I think you can set up a framework but real cultural change takes time. And Nov/Dec doesn’t seem like the ideal time to do it. I ask because trying to find a way to present this to my boss with proof points.

My base salary progression with 3-4 YoE: 60K (Company 1), 71K (Company 2), and currently 83K (Company 2, Promo). My consulting focus is currently in healthcare. Glassdoor shows a wide range from 95k-125k. My target is 110k-120k. Is this a stretch?

Advice on switching practice areas: I have an interview tomorrow for a litigation firm. I am in my second year of practice as a transactional real estate attorney. I find that work unfulfilling and I really miss researching/drafting.Prior to practicing, I had a clerkship and did litigation work as an intern throughout law school. I don’t think I’m that far removed from that litigation exposure to warrant them not giving me a job, but I just want to make sure I frame it in the best way possible.
