Yes. I actually did pub fin IB for 1.5 years as an analyst coming from consulting and did around 2.5B in muni bond issuances and financial advisory work for higher education and non profits. Very niche sector and very overlooked but tons of exits. I eventually decided to go do LMM M&A about a year ago . If you’re interested in that stuff I would definitely recommend and could make some intros.
VP1 - where you located? This seems like the dream haha
I work in public finance (2.5 yrs) too where I work mostly with public power clients (POUs - utilities). It’s definitely a niche field, but it’s not going anywhere.
I think the exit opps are kind of limited since most of the modeling is done within DBC. You just tell the software to size the bonds based off of constraints, which can get complicated. Most of the exit opportunities are to government roles, mostly on the finance side.
Fee wise, the business is very low margin. So, IBs typically make $1.50 - $2.00 a bond. I think the banks make more revenue trading the bonds than they do underwriting them. As a result, a lot of people have exited the business like Citi and UBS. Right now there is a surplus of pub fin professionals looking for jobs.
I think pub fin will always be around. But, you aren’t really going to make a whole lotta money compared to the corporate finance people.
Well, UBS already got out of the business a long time ago. They tried coming back and it didn’t work out. Citi got out of the business too which was pretty big. But, public finance will always be around though since municipalities will always need to borrow money.
If there comes a time when there are only 1-2 banks, the fees are going to increase rapidly which will incentive more banks to come back into the space. So, I don’t think there will ever come a time where there is only 1-2 banks.
I have heard really good things about them. I had a friend who worked there and she said the culture and work-life balance are great. She also said the benefits are good. She seems to be really happy there and has been for quite some time.
Would not advise joining this industry if you want career growth
It’s not necessarily the easiest industry for career growth, I mean. There are only so many CFOs or debt managers or MDs necessary in a field so tiny. Other sectors have more senior opportunities available
