Can anyone think of an obvious reason why I can get interviews applying to BCG/Bain but have gotten rejected by 15 fortune 1000 companies for generic business analyst roles asking for 1-3 yr exp?

Because BCG and Bain can turn clay into something good. These fortune 500s can’t and are expecting that “something good” from jump.

No offence to Fortune 500 analysts, but 80% of analysts I interacted with in Pharma sector (for example) barely know Index match, I was not even asking for Tableau or something more advanced...This makes it really hard to believe the above statement

Because recruiters for industry jobs can be very narrow minded in what they look for. Don’t have experience using PeopleSoft? Never worked with people based in Belarus? Missed the required total years of experience by 7.2 months? You’re toast.

Well, I think the simplest explanation would be that BCG/Bain is a direct consulting to consulting transition, while Fortune 500 may be looking for specific experience. The projects you have done at Deloitte regardless of focus/type of work will translate to consulting. They don’t necessarily translate to the industry roles, because industry tends to look for specific expertise. And, applicant filter settings that are geared toward consulting for BCG/Bain, and not for industry.

Too expensive? Dislike consultants? Not a good culture fit?

I’m assuming just the automated screening of resumes? I had the same, actually got an interview with Google and Amazon as a software engineer. Rejected by “backups” (banks, also as a software dev). Also have been rejected by McDonald’s every summer I applied for a part time job 😂
