Sure, in the early days of automobiles the various companies involved in the business were always trying to encourage people to drive as much as possible. Michelin had the idea of rating restaurants to encourage people to drive to them, simply because people who drive would have to buy tires. Today we don't need much encouragement to use automobiles, but you'd have to put yourself in the mind of someone trying to sell tires a century ago to grasp the logic of the restaurant guide. Of course, over the decades the Michelin rating has evolved into a phenomenon which also now comprises hotels in some cities.
This. They have been doing it for decades in Europe, ( infact the first guides predate WWI) but only became a thing in the US around 2005 and was initially only in NYC.
OP I am embarrassed to admit this but I totally thought that Michelin tires and Michelin stars were totally different and not at all the same company. I don't know how I lived this long without ever knowing that but I need to simmer on this before I even think about how they are now doing hotels too.
There are these crazy tools called Google and Wikipedia to learn about things.
